There is a good example I used a while back to build-up a java GUI with appropriate-state java actions and views which I shall retrieve when I get home. It is pure java without any third-party libraries needed. It basically load/saves confi

Hardcoded multiple screens with bits enabled/disabled is a very bad idea for many reasons and is worth avoiding simply to be able to manage complexity and coupling/cohesion issues in your system.

Should/is there any guidance to use on HN? Is it doomed to be another digg/reddit/etc. clone?

With all due respect, am I alone in thinking there is a lot of echo in HN at the moment, with much of it not really hacker related? Example... http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=218496 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=218540 http:/

This is essentially the same as http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=218496 (without the login needed for those who don't want to sign-up with another site) ...and some reasoning is explained at http://broadstuff.com/archives/1031-Why-w

Really annoying. Why can't people build things to help others not hinder them?

Anything that encourages Linux use (especially by Windows users) is good. Until people are exposed to other systems, they will never really appreciate how poor Windows is at many things.

I agree. In my past experience I have found it actually better to build all the domain elements (model) first based on command line usage, as it more clearly and accurately defines the problem (focus is not lost on GUI issues), and then w

As mentioned in the article, this is analogous to Facebook, and although the idea is it will help Selling Manager take off as a platform (those who have used it know how bad it is) and at the same time remove the appeal of other third-party

As someone who is does some contracting my suggestions would be... A). Ask/call around your network/contacts and get information direct. This may also land you a job too. B). Ring around the leading job agencies in the area you intend to wo

Get traction, build a large user base, and the money will follow ...this seems to be general startup mantra. But $1B in revenue even from 118M users is a steep target, and most sites would be happy with $7 per user. In this respect I think

I have seen first hand how being poor forces you to innovate in such countries. Hence, I agree with pg and the like that startups should be poor at the begining stages too.

Laptops provide them more opportunities for them (via understanind/access to tech), but being poor, I dare to say they will find more innovative uses.

App Engine is good and everything but at present still has too many restrictions e.g. limited python/django implementations. Without being able to use many of the python/django libraries, it makes life much harder.
