I was refering to the concept of "total dominion" over our computing devices, and trying to illustrate that this a hopeless goal. Yes, you could generate your own power, live in total isolation off the grid, attempt to make everything in yo

Thanks for the link, it does give more context for where Stallman is coming from. It's a poignant story. It's a tricky question about personal ethics and judgement. Is it possible for someone to have personal ethics that don't implicitly in

I'm not being literal! Their are flavors of personal ethics. You can be a non-conformist and have ideals about behavior that don't extend to other people. Really that's the core of my annoyance with his point of view. It's just annoyance. R

Why the down vote? it's a simple observation. A negative opinion on a piece of writing doesn't make someone a troll. In addition, many people, such as myself, are not familiar with Richard Stallman's work. So the discussion is not repetitiv

But this idea of having dominion over any computational object (or really any object) is a fantasy. Are you going generate your own electricity riding your generator bike (powered by veggies from your garden) as you code? That's where I thi

I've only read a few writings by Richard Stallman. It seems plain to me that he is an egomaniac with some kind of rigid obsessional thinking patterns. People like this are very annoying, and ironically undermine their own case if they inten

Why does the Google promo video make me feel icky? I already feel like my attachment to my iPhone is not healthy, I literally feel lost when I don't have it nearby. I might be too old to get excited about stuff like this. I suppose if it he

I'm a music producer, and this is a constant problem for me that after many years still boggles my mind. The root of the problem is that producing a modern style recording of music is resource expensive. Far more than anybody would like it

One reason I don't think gets mentioned enough for software sucking: developers don't really use the product enough to optimize it (they don't have time). Especially for complex applications. If there isn't an effective feedback loop from u

Copyright is generally interpreted that you can only copyright the part of a work that is original. So if you are granted a copyright for a work that includes unoriginal materials (which is virtually all works) you don't get a copyright on

I feel I am feeding a very energetic troll by even commenting again but there is something nagging at me. The points around the pricing of digital goods are mainly related to the particular nature of them: high fixed costs of production and

Given that most people need a job to pay the bills, it seems that "I need the money" has to be one of the most truthful answers in a job interview (or "I want more money"). That's why it's a job and not just a fun thing to do. A lot of tale
