Exactly, given a timeout you can't assume the server is clearly successful (or unsuccessful!). That was my point, we're definitely agreeing :) Usually you'd generate some kind of idempotency key (randomized token as you said)

Most of the tax payer population, but not most of the gains available for taxation. Small increases in taxes to the very wealthy would far outweigh large increases in taxes to the middle class in terms of government revenue. On top of that,

Large companies spend a LOT of money trying to increase conversions by even tenths of a percent. Yes, 2% is substantial.

The third line of thinking is a combination of the two: "In the short term, the market is a voting machine. In the long term, the market is a weighing machine". This is a popular quote from Benjamin Graham ( https://en.w

If you're going to rely on personal experience in an argument, "in six weeks I learned enough to criticize many engineers with decades of experience" is not a strong argument. That's not even claiming to be a 10x engine

This is an interesting read about the hotel industry. I don't think it disproves the idea though that there are people who want to low-skilled jobs who can't find them. For instance, from that article: "The popular Mackinac I

My point was that there's not an unlimited supply of low-skilled jobs. The fact that if you're qualified for one, you're qualified for another isn't really relevant when they can be very hard to find in some areas.

You're assuming there's unlimited demand for employees by McD's... which, in point of fact, is absolutely not the case.

You're comparing apples to oranges. I know a lot of engineers at a lot of companies who look at porn on their work laptops (which isn't illegal). I don't know a single engineer who would take documents from their previous com

Currently they're unprofitable and their target market is other, unprofitable companies (e.g. turning away Fortune 500s, from the article). If that changes then it looks more sustainable.

I have some friends at AirBnB and I've heard it's much more modest, like $300/yr or something. My experience with these type of "dogfooding" credits is that companies are much more generous when they're smaller

That's very important in cooking in general, but is definitely not the most important part of baking pizza. Heat transfer is a lot more important, that's why different cooking surfaces (e.g. stone vs. steel) can yield dramatically

Something seems off here - they mention using 100 workers (a worker for every request). I would expect that to perform way more than 40% faster unless there's a ton of overhead in creating those workers.

Allowing people to put in-law units in their backyard seems like a good move in the short term (to increase supply), but also seems like it might cause problems in the long term: NIMBYs are then _even more_ incentivized to prevent new housi

I've been very open about that (it's in my HN profile) and I didn't think it was relevant here since I was quoting the judge and not offering up my own opinions. Apologies if you disagree. :)

That's a quote from the judge, not something that I said. The judge also doesn't make any value judgement about whether or not their assumption was reasonable, so I'm not sure what or who you're arguing against.

Note that the reason he told them to drop the trade secret claims is because they're kind of ridiculous: > the judge scolded Waymo for being "overbroad" in what it says are 121 trade secrets involved in the case. For examp
