Of course it's a net positive to consumers. It's a business being run at a loss, and propped up with constant capital inflow - i.e. a massive transfer of wealth from investors to consumers.

The lack of patent laws was very clearly a positive for Germany; the argument for those is IMO much weaker than for copyright. Especially for developing, backward economies (early-19th-century US, late-19th-century Germany, and contempora

"We're all in this together" is more of an aspirational phrase, meant to motivate the better-off to contribute. When it doesn't work, the people who aren't better off will of course be reminded every time they hea

1. Alice limiting what she reports is a function of her phone software; this is trivially doable by just not broadcasting beacons, or after-the-fact by not reporting your beacons (or reporting false beacons) for certain times. 2. The number

No particular reason why a higher orbit is any better than a lower orbit. As long as you're a good 1000 kilometers away from the GEO belt at closest, and preferably a little inclined so that closest approach only happens ~2 times a day

The article says GEO, but actual quotes in the article say "GEO graveyard orbit". What this means is that, at the end of the satellite's service life, it was boosted into a lower (in this case [1]) or higher (also common) o
