It also looks like that Principle/Staff engineers have to justify everything they do to get their compensation whereas VPs/directors have a lot of great excuses to brush off failures while keeping power. The power dynamics are abs

How do you feel about up skilling, contribute to open source, or even launch your own side projects? Or do you use your free time to enjoy life more? I’d like to think I’d use the time to write a book but I’d probably just to chores around

This is an interesting thought. I learned programming thru a text editor vim. I didn’t have autocomplete and LSPs wouldn’t be invented until 8 years later. I wasn’t smart enough to figure out how to install/setup omnicomplete or snippe

You should check out the sci fi book Blindsight by Peter Watts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindsight_(Watts_novel) It's a first contact story about an alien species that doesn't have consciousness.

I've posted this comment before but I grew up in Florida on a decent amount of land for a curious child. One day I was feeding the crows some stale cuban bread, there were probably 5 of them sitting on the fence watching me throw the b

How would you rate the prerequisites of each course and level of material covered? I've never taken Andrew Ng's ML class, but the impression I get online is that it's great but it's always hard to tell from these positiv

Meme replies should be downvoted, there are other places online where joke comments are a regular occurrence. I like how HN at least tries to force a real discussion and attempts at humor need to be both sincere and not low effort.

I mean you don’t have to play the game, as much as your company leadership would want you to believe otherwise. Learning to say no, compartmentalize your job from your personal life, setting boundaries, and just accepting that the Sun will

Agreed. Free markets is such a massive misnomer. The only thing that matters is competitive markets. “Free markets” is typically associated with regulatory capture, buying out your competitors, and abusing your monopoly status to thwart oth

Thank you for this comment. I was really confused on the difference between MMFs and T Bills, going by the other comments in this thread it seemed like there is a preference for MMFs without stating why.

Yeah, it was shocking to learn that SCOTUS doesn't have an independent ethics board. It was last year where they declared they will police themselves, which they don't seem capable of doing. At least Congress has an independent no

It’s really hard to advocate for this when one side is a deliberate bad actor that refuses to legislate. It is a great political strategy tho. Use the courts to tell a do nothing Congress to pass legislation.

I can’t blame them. This is the same court that removed rights from half of Americans and tends to be extremely pro corporation. Not too mention the bribery that some members engage in and an unwillingness to abide by any ethical standards.

How do you square this opinion with countries like South Korea or Japan, two of which both have extremely low immigration and low fertility? I think the, more obvious IMO, answer is that as a species we no longer have an optimistic vision o
