Yes, you're talking about getting access via public education. Bill Gates, as a child, had nearly 24/7 personal access to these machines. Something most professionals didn't even have.

This is not pedantry, this is adhering to the actual definition of open source that is generally accepted in our community: https://opensource.org/osd > Open source doesn’t just mean access to the source code

Imagine how much public good can be done if the government had public software works project that did not need to rely on advertising to be useful while serving everyone (not just a boardroom of millionaires).

It is interesting, especially in the context of Gates childhood upbringing and his extremely rare access to computers and computer training. Something that maybe one or two other dozen children had access to in the entire country during tha

I recently left a company that was spending $10million on SalesForce licenses that no one was apparently using. When the re-org happened, heads were rolled. How common do you think that story is? Over paying for software that doesn't a

Do they explain how they made the landing page or share the code somewhere? I agree, it's stunning.

I mean there is an alternative out there for making software that doesn't require profit and can still provide societal value. The alternative isn't to forage in the wilderness, please tell me you are just having a laugh and weren

None of this sounds necessary for the human race. Maybe David Graeber was right.

Try to make a thread about unions on HN and read the comments, then it'll make sense.

If you want an alternative view, I like the confrontational tone. You know what you excel at and attack your competitors with it. I really dislike how all the other JS UI libraries are basically the same and espouse the same ideas. Svelte w

Agreed. I don't think people realize that 5mb of a PNG is way different than 5mb of JS. The browser parsers that PNG way way faster than it parses JS.

Yeah, let's continue talking about how no one person in the entire human race should have more than $50 million dollars. I agree with the other poster.

Also I think Fidelity open puts out statements on the value of Twitter since they are a shareholder. The only recent info I can find on this was an article from last October: https://www.forbes.com/sites/tylerroush/

I don't think Hunter Biden pardon openly stated that the US government is okay with fraud in public companies and the SEC has no power to prevent fraud, but I don't exactly read much news nowadays. This pardon is much much worse,

My issue with deno and jsr is that it only exists at the discretion of VC funding. That does not feel like a sustainable ecosystem where the incentives are misaligned (wanting a return on capital versus proper open engineering).

So sad that capital owners will resort to child labor exploitation rather than paying fair market wages.

Is Vercel any different in this regard? they’ve often broke APIs between releases too. The fact that a company that raised $500million is on par with a small team of volunteers is more damning not less.

The union had no choices when capital decides they want more money. Look at what you're arguing here dude. You're blaming workers for trying to protect their jobs when the issue is that capital is too powerful and needs to be regu

I don't understand how you can make these comments but not thread the needle that the problems you are worried about is strictly the result of capital. Acting as if labor creating a union means Capital should just pack up shop and leav

Many developers have no authority on who is hired at the company they work at or even who allowed to be interviewed for that matter, this is where your privilege comes in.

The problem with saying "market power" is that it implicitly condones that those with money are correct since they have influence over the market. Workers can't influence markets like the billionaire class, that's why th

You do realize that this is immensely privileged and something that 99% of working devs can't do right? Especially the bit about making calls and instantly getting a job, that's something even famous engineers can't get too.
