If you're just starting out with Ruby I strongly recommend the book "Ruby for Rails" by David A. Black. It teaches you Ruby and shows you how Rubyisms work with Rails.

A S-corp owner must take what the IRS deems to be a "reasonable salary" based on the overall profit of the company, and must pay self employment taxes (FICA, Medicare, etc.) on that amount. The IRS does not give out much guidance on the def

I agree that he should have some privacy but as the CEO of one of the largest publicly traded companies the state of his health is something investors need to know.

I tried to use AirBNB a couple times in NYC but my experience boiled down to (a) people not replying when I contacted them about their property, and (b) people trying to get me to pay them cash directly instead of via AirBNB. Glad to hear t

I've been in New York for 3 months and less than half of my calls go through without a problem. Haven't called to complain yet mostly because I don't want to spend an hour on the phone. I swear I'm not crazy either.. :-)

Since Apple normally releases new iPhones in June, does this mean the Verizon iPhone 4 will be obsolete in less than 6 months? It will be lame if Verizon has the iPhone 4 and then AT&T gets a new GSM-only iPhone 5 in June.

Anyone know if there is anything like this in New York? Either open to all or invite only, pay or free?

As much as I've tried, I really can't get into "test first" development. I find that I make so many tiny changes when I am first working on a new project, and refactor so much, that the tests would really slow me down. But once things get m

Having lived in London for 2 years (2003-2005) we were very frustrated with parcel delivery. The Royal Mail was pretty good as the doorman at our building held packages for us, but other services such as DHL were hit or miss as they largel

We're actively sending pay per click traffic to our online store and it's very easy to spend hundreds of dollars. When our traffic converts it's great but it pains me to think I could be sending traffic to a Heroku 503 error page and have

Do whatever it takes to program every day. Either build a few apps for yourself, work on a new app/business you plan to launch, or try to extend open source projects. The important thing is trying. Like an writer or a painter, the best wa

Ultimately Twitter is a business that needs to generate ROI for its investors. The open API gave them plenty of ideas for functionality and "holes" in their system, and Twitter has made it clear that they need to fill those holes. The multi

Railscasts didn't exist when I first started using Rails in the fall of 2005 - they are an invaluable resource and just one of many the author points out. For someone who has not used Ruby before, it will likely take years to go from 0 to R
