Google showcased a ton of this at Google I/O. Android ties in really well to their webapps, Google TV (If that succeeds), etc. I remember one example was that you can go to maps.google.com and click on a phone icon, and it just sends it str

I disagree on that prediction. There were a load of online auction sites, then eBay won. You could wrongly say that people moved from auction site to auction site, but that wasn't the case. Maybe there will be the next facebook, the next eb

Dismissing webapps isn't really fair. Facebook succeeded in building an empire. They have a massive barrier to entry via the network effect.

huh? Reddit is pretty much the best example of this. No real technology, just a community, sold for $10m or whatever, and now struggling because it doesn't have a business model.

I much prefer this to posting a question on a forum/stackoverflow etc type site. Probably my own impatience, but I want an answer now . IRC is actually growing a load. It's pretty widely used. The fun thing is, I don't think anyone really

I don't really look to big corporations to decide what to use. That was the whole reason I started a company. Big corporations do things that make sense for big corps. One is to treat programmers like factory workers and have them all use s

Anecdotal again, but every worthwhile programmer I've known does not use an IDE. But then as I say, a lot of this is semantics. My terminal, and my brain, is my IDE.

I also hate debuggers. Tried them, don't like them. They're great for when you don't have the source code and need to reverse engineer something, but for finding bugs, I think they're terrible. Different people like different things though.

>> "when writing code for a large enterprise app, IDEs just can't be beaten." For that case, then yes you're probably right. Thank god I don't write 'enterprise apps'. IDE's are good for getting mediocre productivity out of bad prog

I do :) And I enjoy having nice neat tight code as a result. I don't need the completion, shortcuts etc, because I "know" the code base. Sometimes I need to grep etc, but knowing, and having a handle on the entire codebase is pretty useful

My IDE is the terminal. I don't want that in a text editor. I use a text editor to edit text, and a terminal to do everything else. As long as it can do syntax highlighting, copy paste, line numbering, can show files/dirs in a tree so you c

It sure can suck, but it's all choices. You don't have to get investment, don't have to hire employees. You can do consulting on the side so you're not poor. You can even take holidays if you plan for it. So a lot of it is just down to plan

I'd learn to think while you walk. Think through problems. Work out solutions. I find that driving/cycling/walking is really really valuable thinking time. I don't think trying to type at the same time would make it quite as useful. I think

Come on. The other guys are like 10% the cost of Amazon. Data center internal traffic is usually free. Are you talking about datacenter to other datacenter traffic? In any event. You're wasting money. Reddit could easily be hosted for $3k/m

They have a business model and revenue. It doesn't matter quite so much what they use. $1000 hosting costs vs $10k hosting costs for them is 'meh'. For startups, and Reddit, the difference does(should) matter.

I don't know what the "writing your app in Java" bit is about... Care to elaborate? Mibbit is written in Java (Custom written framework and server), and handles traffic just fine. Java is insanely efficient for network IO. It's an apples to

I can't understand how that would be the case. Did you run virtualization on the dedi servers so you had multiple 'machines' on them to play with? (If you need that sort of thing for your architecture) What was the limiting factor on dedica

Whitelisting solves nothing. It's still a 'bad' userbase. It's been cultivated to be anti consumerist anti advertising etc. Whitelisting on adblock will let through a tiny bit of CPM based revenue, but people won't click in the numbers that
