Just because Justin Bieber has 6m followers, doesn't mean any of them tweet. Twitter has always been more of a 'broadcast to followers' than a conversational tool.

I'm slightly biased, but this is what I aim to solve with Mibbit - make it a little more friendly and clean looking. Hopefully I'm headed in the right direction so far.

Click on the link twice. Google docs has some weird bug at the moment afaik which causes this. (Worked for me the second click, probably some cookie set the first time).

The alternative is to go on a different IRC network more friendly and less rules based... Freenode ironically isn't very free.

Fair enough. It definitely depends on your websites profile etc. I worked out a while back what it'd cost to run Mibbit on EC2 (Let alone any intermediary), and it was crazy money. But we use a fair bit of bandwidth and not too much CPU so

Image how much more profitable you could be if you got a dedicated server or 10.

Whilst Amazon cloud, Heroku etc may be hot for startups who don't really mind about throwing money away, I don't think that will last. Both are significantly, prohibitively expensive for companies interested in turning a profit or having a

Closure compiles it down to 5000 or 5E3 or whatever is smallest in my build process, so all the browser sees is '5e3'. I find 5*1000 most readable in my source code though.

Relying on feature detection alone for WebSocket is a big mistake though. Websocket can fail for a number of reasons - proxies, stupid ISPs that interfere with HTTP traffic etc. In Mibbit, the code is something like this: if(WebSocket i

The number of people who want to pay directly for something is far smaller than the number of people willing to view an advert. With advertising, you get more visitors, you get more revenue. And the number of visitors available is billions.

Nice to see some success with advertising revenue. It always seems like HN and several other places are heavily skewed towards charging end users directly. But that's only one option open (And IMHO, it's not quite as scalable and fun as adv

I still use 'n' and 'f' every so often. Reason being, on the ZX Spectrum, it had all the BASIC keywords on each key, and pressing the key would input the keyword itself (depending on where you were etc). The 'N' key had 'NEXT', and the 'F'

Agree. Anyone can write a webserver in a day. It's all the extra crap that takes a while to get just right. The hero worship really puts me off checking HN.

why 5 years? js isn't exactly new. I remember writing my first browser games in js (tetris and minesweeper) in 1999.

The worst thing for my wife I think, is when I'm away from the house with little connectivity, and I need to call her up and ask her to fix something. "Open up my macbook, now open up this document, now open a terminal, type in ./deploy.sh"

For example: "Never go with your first instincts." Google "Always go with your first instincts" = About 50,800 results. Google "Never go with your first instincts" = About 7 results. Both of those are clearly stupid advice to give.
