I'm not sure, but you just made me miss the day of scripting BBS Door games such as Trade Wars 2002.

I was going to say the same thing, and say that 1997 was the last time I saw anything using VRML, and that it was, indeed, way too early for "3D HTML" back then. No idea now that everyone has hopped on the 3D Movies/TV bandwagon in full for

Is there a genuinely compelling reason to banish one font or another from our currency? Really? Font Nerds are very high up on the list of geek subcultures that I do not understand. Not quite as high up as furries, though.

Oh, believe me, I know. That's why I said it caused me much gnashing of teeth. SSH, particularly OpenSSH, is such a thing of beauty. It's a shame most sysads that I've dealt with abuse it like it's rsh and telnet.

You're absolutely correct, but it's actually pretty common to distribute that public key all over hell and then start shuffling the private one around between the ones you find yourself ssh-ing off of. At my last job, this practice among wa

Hey now! What's wrong with security blogs? :P Security (both physical and infosec) is one of my biggest passions, and I've been writing about it for plenty longer than a decade. Granted, for the first several years, it was a pile of .txt fi

I caught this via a friend of mine, and I tried it without a site: search and mostly came up with too much noise to signal in the results. I'd imagine that a lot of "paste over the Internet" sites have this problem, and I'd bet SSH keys are

I've had a few things from my sites hit the top of HN. In fact, that's how I found HN (so, big thanks to those who've submitted my stuff on helping me find this awesome community) Still, I get an order of magnitude more traffic from a goo

It's all about defense in depth. Local root exploits are part of why I run my stuff chrooted on an OpenBSD system. It's not perfect, but it's pretty much the best you're going to do. Still, you can't just stop there. Having a one-time-passw

I got laid off in January, but I really, really miss my commute. It cleared my mind, woke me up on the way to work, made me feel healthier, and let me blow off some steam on the way home after the really stressful days. It was an hour each

I had a laptop hard drive suffer a head crash on the lower platter, and it was able to seek past it. Further, the freezer trick seemed to work a little, but it may have been simply letting the drive rest for a while. I do know that I've nev

ddrescue is a godsend. I actually had my backup drive bite the dust on me. All my live data was fine, but my backup drive ate it. ddrescue saved the day. I agree with pretty much everyone here, though, in saying that "restore it from backu

Okay, I'll give you this. You made some good points against PHP, but prior to my post, look at some of the suggestions that were completely off-the-wall, impractical and hardly ever used for anything in the wild. I won't enumerate them here

My last job, about 80% of the systems were Solaris, 15% AIX and 5% Linux/Windows. Granted, this was a large financial institution. The place prior to that was about 90% OpenBSD, 10% Arch Linux. A startup. And before that, probably about 25%

Advice for the future: 1) Chase your passion! I'm currently unemployed as well, but I've spent the last decade mostly getting paid to do the things I like to do. For me, that's Information Security. 2) Lock down your facebook profile and do
