I got my first computer around the time that happened, a humble Pentium 1. It was only much, much later that I learned about Linux, then FreeBSD and the whole history behind UNIX, RISC machines and all that - at a point when it was mostly h

To add a perspective here: Being offered help, especially in a way that says "why don't you do X?" can often provoke a reaction that tries to justify oneself. You want to feel validated in your self-pity, and if the solution

https://securescrypt.com/ If you click through on the links, you'll be rewarded with a whole network of equally bad websites full of probably fraudulent companies, fake cryptocoins and what not.

I think the term "free software" is a marketing failure because you'd always have to add "as in free speech, not free beer". In German you can differentiate that, "frei" vs. "gratis".

If there only was a version of this thing with a more serious storage (like a small onboard NVVMe or something) and a boot path like coreboot or EFI... is there mainline 2d / 3d acceleration nowadays? Could even release a USB-C dock so

Editing a config file for a program should not be more complicated than opening the file in your preferred editor, no matter your distro. Snaps break that. I can't understand why they would break such fundamental thing and seemingly do

I've got an ansible playbook that modifies my ~/.config/lxc/config.yml for certain deployment scenarios. Due to LXC now being a snap, the file is simply not there. I guess it's 5 layers deep in namespaces, overlayfs

I can't praise Unison enough. I've been using it every day for over 10 years and is easily one of the most useful pieces of software I've ever come across. I've donated multiple times over the years.
