You could always get the dev tools for free* because they always came with some other purchase. That seems like it would cover the "SOX" compliance to me. Examples: you bought a copy of Mac OS X (the dev tools were in the box), you bought a

I'll bite. I don't care if WB makes a Mickey Mouse movie. Walt is dead. We're not talking about the state stealing "Rearden Metal" shortly after its invention. Generations have grown up with this character and it seems just as outrageous as

LOL, but even those two points aren't mentioned in the article. I'm down to talk about XMPP; I share your interest in the subject. I just don't know why anyone voted this particular submission up. Sorry, I don't mean to be an HN curmudgeon.

This is a press release with no evidence cited about XMPP's takeover. They do say there is some evidence in two linked documents, but both are behind pay walls. Where's the meat?

On a personal note, I was raised in a Christian Science family. While devout, my parents were very attentive and I was lucky to have a healthy childhood (though I didn't even try aspirin until I was in college). A philosophy degree at SFSU

Even Hitchens' examples reflect some basic rights a civil libertarian should want to protect. Mormon polygamy: the government shouldn't be telling you who you can or can't marry. Christian sects that disapprove of medicine: the government s

I think evolutionary humility is a great thing to be reminded of, thank you Palomides. What's interesting to me is, an organism wouldn't have to out-compete the majority of already existing natural organisms to end the world, it "only" need

Glad to see something like this. As formulated, I'm not sure how it's better than a calendar. I still need to be in a browser to enter a goal, so entry doesn't seem any easier. The reminders are random, but I'm not sure how random is any be

Agreed about Huxley. Neil Postman covers many of the same themes in his non-fiction work. Technopoly in particular is a good read. Atlas Shrugged is _not_ a message I think our age is lacking however. I enjoyed it as a kid, but it's pretty

Sounds cool, anyone concerned about their email touching additional third parties? You can do the same trick yourself with a little handy Python: http://snipt.org/qvnl/ Save that to your utils directory. Don't remember where I found the s

Huh, I don't see what they're seeing in the icon. Excel 2011, at least, has been a revelation compared to 2008. I'd go as far as to say it's some of the best mouse-driven software I've ever used. What good is Word these days? A spreadsheet

In 2006 I visited the Yangon Zoo. Four elephants were chained behind a short barrier (designed more to keep humans out than elephants in). They begged zoo visitors for handouts, swaying side to side as much as the chains allowed. A fifth el

True, not having parens on the end of the function call makes this look better (and those parens are optional in Ruby). Extra kudos to lisp flavors because you could argue they have even "purer" syntax than Python. Mostly, I'm just tickled

I liked this line: "Though Ruby/Rails would likely have been fine too, there’s something about it that I just found unnatural. If I had a dog, the dog would bark at the Ruby code." That's how I felt when I started learning Ruby after years

According to Prop 13 grand-daddy Howard Jarvis, state revenues have indeed increased since Prop 13 passed (1978). We have a heckavu budget morass in California. Our ballot initiative democracy has _written into the constitution_ both spendi

Agreed! Some of the biggest successes have this in common: they've gotten away with something that wasn't obviously possible/legal. Microsoft: you can make people pay for software. Google: you can index the web (and all online information).

Check out Charles S. Peirce, American father of pragmaticism (not pragmatism). Two essays, 'The Fixation of Belief' and 'How to Make Our Ideas Clear' are particularly inspiring. Google 'peirce how to make our ideas clear', it's number one.

Has anyone been able to connect a VPN with openvpn? That, plus a mysql client that gracefully re-connects when the server kills you, would be worth much more than $5 to me.

I think we can all agree that Safari is the furthest behind in this regard. For a company that takes pride in stripping things down to the bare essentials, having an address bar and a search bar is becoming obnoxious.

I wonder if there's a simile to make with electric utilities. A "smart grid" could potentially distinguish between surcharge-able electrons, just as a "smart internet" (one without net neurtrality) could distinguish between good and bad pac
