I haven't seen that anywhere I have worked. Normally this is a form of double speak. Developers claim to "focus on the product" but typically the only focus is upon the developers' core strengths first and only then

As a JavaScript developer looking at startups a few months ago I noticed the hiring pains were largely self-inflicted. The primary problem is that nobody knows what quality looks like. As a result everything is extremely beginner, based on

1. Dedicated curation. Part of what makes the NodeJS project so successful is the formal curation applied to its documentation. 2. Writing takes practice. Ignoring this due to any bias is a case for institutionalizing ignorance. At my curre

I don’t worry about design. The aesthetics I care about are consistency, organization of content, and understandability. I hate writing about past and current projects in the corporate world where it feels like you own three lines of code i

My personal recommendation is to do some self reflection on what things are most important to you when it comes to spinning up a new project and build your own kit. This is your tool bag as a developer. I have seen a lot of people try this

I wrote my own build tool many years ago and rarely extend it with new build tasks. The core tool hasn’t changed much in the 5+ years I have been using it, so why bother with something like gulp?

React is the hotness of the moment. If you want to maximize career mobility, salary, and immaturity all at the same time React is for you.

I have written many such comments on HN myself and seen many such comments from others. The motivation is generally universal. Software is an immature industry with many beginner experts that believe themselves to be experts but cry about h

Looking at many job posts senior means capable of using React and capable of talking about, but not necessarily using, TypeScript. When senior sounds like faster junior I really have trouble finding what actually differentiates a senior f

I am trying to solve for decentralization using file systems cross-OS as the primary design target. I chose the file system because it has a lot of complexity built in. If I can nail this I can decentralize anything. I am passionate about

If it takes seconds to execute more features you are doing it extremely wrong.

> Of course we do. Apparently not. A few seconds is a really big deal, but that is just download time while you are also clearly not accounting for execution time. Caching code will not save on execution time.

There is risk in job swapping. If you enjoy chasing trends, as in an expert beginner, that may be the way to go. If you want to build products or become any kind of actual expert your career will stagnate.

The problem isn’t Reacts API. It’s the absurd extreme declarative beginner mindset and code style you will be evaluated against. If you have any real experience without React you have to really lie about who you are.
