To clarify, zIIP processing is only relevant under z/OS. Linux processing runs under IFLs. But that's not to say you can't get some offloading in Linux. By design, mainframes can hardware accelerate some processing. The crytp

In 2012, The Economist reported that mainframes accounted for about a quarter of IBM's revenue and about half of its profits. [0] [1] IT budgets for large banks and financial firms usually dedicate something like 20% their budget to ma

Modern mainframes have an optional cryptographic coprocessor addon. The hardware, or cryptocard [1], is specialized to provide high-throughput for common cryptographic functions, including SHA-256. (It does lots more than that too.) The lat

Not to understate the severity of this issue, but how is this any different than if I built a custom device that contained a USB hub + emulated HID keyboard to fire off a malicious macro + flash storage housed inside a plastic shell that lo

Shellshock is also "reverse-shell-able". This Python script relies on /dev/tcp which is not available by default on some distros. (Source: @ortegaalfredo) But you could probably rework it to use netcat. http:/

While a different technique, this reminds me of how researchers were able to extract keystrokes based on the sound from each key press. Here is the original paper: http://rakesh.agrawal-family.com/papers/ssp04kba.pdf

SkyDock[0] is another alternative. It uses SkyDNS. It is a little more setup, but it has a few additional features. crosbymichael is a sharp guy. [0]: https://github.com/crosbymichael/skydock

These are handy when you are stuck on a connection that blocks everything but HTTP(S), like many corporate environments. Many of these web-based ssh tools are based of the excellent term.js[0]. [0]: https://github.com/chjj&

ZFS is great. But one thing scares me away from using it. With ZFS, you can't just simply add a new disk raidz set. You have to either build a new pool to send your data to, or : 1. Buy the same amount of (but larger) hard-disks 2. R

The killer feature is I/O and proximity to mainframe data. With hipersockets, you get memory-to-memory speed networking to your mainframe data. You just can't replicate that in VMware.
