Nay-saying is easy. Making progress is hard work. Kudos to Google for pushing on this front. The author speculates about the state after a decade. By that time, this article will be forgotten, but google's work might still be remembered. a)

That knowing things with the mind is as limiting as it is empowering. In other words, your mind can be blown and you'd still be alright.

It's somewhat unfair to equate co-founders with web services and software. Co-founders can say "you can't do this dude" or "don't you think this'll work better?" or "hey I had this idea which I think is great" or go out and have a beer with

If you want to satisfactorily explain this to a school kid, it seems like the two most significant factors are a) the angle of attack during take-off - like packing the air under the wing while creating a vacuum above it and b) the curvatur

Won't use. My reason might sound silly though - I like that Hacker News looks different from a facebook feed page. Its sickening to have everything look the same. I think that prevents you from wearing different hats at different times,

Spot on! I posted the same thing without reading yours (now stands deleted 'cos it was more or less a duplicate). I'll just add this - Even MIT's famous formerly-known-as-SICP course is now around programming real world asynchronous machine

Nevertheless, I'd advice reading the release notes before installing. My mom's laptop happened to have the precise laptop configuration that Lucid Lynx release notes warned I'd have trouble with ... and I hadn't read it :) My mom's been usi

If you take jpegs from old cameras and recompress them into jpeg, you can get a remarkable reduction in storage. ... But I can't tell whether they even used such a "recompression to jpeg" control case in coming up with the 39% figure.

This is kind of a useful sign actually. When things look bleak like this, it usually means you're on the verge of something radically new ... and that's exciting to think about. Its like the guy who said "lets close the patent office 'cos e

That's a school exercise, but I can't resist adding a haskell version - perfects = [n | n <- [1..], n == sum (divisors n)] where divisors n = [k | k <- [1..(n `div` 2)], n `mod` k == 0]
