In my country of residence (DE), traditional banks consider me an "immigrant scum" and won't let me open an account. This means I am limited to using neobanks such as N26 and Revolut. On the upside, their verification process

Many modern banks, so-called "neobanks", provide a very limited web version that's only good to check the balance. And you are forced to use their app.

The only problem (at least for me) with de-googled Android is banking, at least where I live. You either can get an account in a bank where everything is done in person or by fax :|, or fully mobile bank that doesn't work without an ap

I was seriously considering getting a Framework laptop (but 13") and what stopped me is the limited shipping. Right now I live in the area where I can order one, but I was looking at another country where I'd prefer to live. It wo

I mostly agree. But I have a couple of horror stories about staying in hotels too. The main thing about hotels is that you rarely book them for a week or a month. So if it's bad, it's usually easy to leave. Also, it's a busin

If you are talking about the current status of DeepL, that would be a low bar.

The last time I added a new device to Signal, I was given the option to sync old messages. Not all of them, but I think it was the last 60 days, which I think is enough.

I tried to stop using WhatsApp, but failed. I even promote Signal to my WhatsApp contacts (if they were to switch, Signal would be the most likely option). I succeeded with most of the people I talk to the most. Unfortunately, the majority

I would separate Nokia Lumia and Microsoft Lumia (the last batch). I was so happy with my Nokia Lumia that I eventually upgraded to a newer Microsoft Lumia phone. What a disappointment it was.

Looking at the state of Windows 11, I doubt that.

However, WhatsApp is the default messaging app in Germany (second only to fax /s). Facebook is the default platform in Sweden. I think other EU countries also rely heavily on US big tech.

When I hear "dumb phone" I think of a device that can make calls and send and receive SMS, maybe a game of Snake and a radio that uses headphones as an antenna, and that's it. But how often do people use these things? I have

I also recently built a gaming PC. First I installed Pop!_OS and it worked really well for games. But as I do some work on it, I wanted something with fresh(er) packages, so I installed CachyOS instead. Games still work (Proton is fantastic

I used Pocket before Mozilla and in the early days of Mozilla ownership, but it was becoming less reliable by the day. I switched to SingleFile[1] and sync the dir between my tablet and laptop using Syncthing. No SaaS, everything stays on m

My understanding is that the sale of hardware alone doesn't make anyone a trillion-dollar company. Selling subscriptions and processing payments does.

There is also simplelogin.io (it is now part of Proton, but they still have an independent subscription). Supports custom domains, or you can use their domains to generate infinite email addresses

It's an alternative to Proton because it doesn't support open standards (like IMAP), but it has the same problem - vendor lock-in.

I used mailbox.org for several years until they forced everyone into more expensive plans by adding irrelevant features like office and cloud storage. This kind of behaviour from them was disappointing.

I know it was available on some models, but many? I doubt it. The last time I checked what was available from Tuxedo (maybe 1.5-2 years ago), the 2-3 models I liked didn't have an ANSI keyboard layout option.

Okay, that's true, I agree - marketing is the main driver of sales. But it should be more than just "being European". At least it should not cost significantly more than comparable imported equivalents.

I understand that. But I also think that manufacturers in Europe should do better and not just try to survive on patriotism. Better products == better sales. After all, we live in a capitalist world.

I don't see the point. Why should it be European (or American, Japanese, Chinese or whatever)? Shouldn't it be better value/quality? Not everything is better just because it's European. I believe that if someone is doing

UX of Spotify - you mean annoying podcasts, ads for the concerts by the bands you've never heard of and mixes with ghost artists? My main issue with Spotify is how bloated it is, how they ruin the UX with almost every update.
