The idea of WOPR is based on the real Soviet system of the early 80s, ВРЯН (вероятность ракетно-ядерного нападения, “the probability of ICBM attack”). It attempted to predict the favorable conditions for a first strike from the US side, giv

What is it, 80s? There is no “company loyalty” since 2000s, and soon there will be no “jobs” in general. We are all contractors and mercenaries now.

It doesn’t work like this. Once a technology has been invented, you cannot out-regulate it out of existence. It will be developed to its conclusion, if only out of curiosity, not to mention the powerful market forces. However, I don’t see a

It doesn't work like this. If there is a war, there is always a possibility for it to escalate to an existential war. If there is an existential war, every possible weapon will be developed to the greatest extent possible to ensure the

Yes. There will be autonomous weapon platforms everywhere regardless of our desires, both from nation-states and non-state actors. To defend from them, you might want to understand how they work, and how they are built.

Well, their products are really expensive (like, outrageously expensive for a hobbyist). From them, I only bought geneticin and something else relatively unsophisticated; if I can source the compounds I need literally from anywhere else, I&

I have experienced a dive like this (EasyJet Geneva-Copenhagen, 2013). It was really scary, to say the least. But apparently this is a relatively common situation, and aircrafts are sturdy enough to handle this without any problems. (Also,

Well, it is now 2023. Perhaps some things finally improved since the 90s. Or so I would hope (apparently not). If you run HPC jobs, you are stuck with the Linux version your cluster supports (probably not too recent), and you probably won’t

Because you won’t be able to run your program on a HPC cluster that runs CentOS 7 with an ancient glibc, if you wrote it in C++17 on your Fedora machine. Or basically anywhere else. It will be much easier with musl.

The concept of a nation state exists for around 300 years, and currently in a crisis. Crypto exists for 15 years (also currently in a crisis, to be fair). I think both governments and crypto will survive somehow, but not in their current fo
