1) Start from the centre and reach any of the sides following a curve, such that as you traverse the curve your distance from the centre should increase, e.g., a circular arc that is less than a semi-circle. (The construction of this curve

Interesting. By similar reasoning, getting most of your calories from fat would lead to the same result. That may be less troublesome than fasting.

Simply because it is slow. In the GP's example if a was a much bigger array, copying it over to b would be expensive. On a related note, in C++ for many containers (if not all) in the standard library, copying is the norm; in "The C++ Progr

According to the Wikipedia page, you need to be a US citizen or resident to be eligible. He seems to be residing in France and I doubt he has a US citizenship. Otherwise, he definitely fits the bill.

Punctuation is supposed to remove ambiguities, and help you read and understand more easily. In your example He said, "I've been outside.". the collection of punctuation marks does very little for making the sentence more understandable, an

For example, KITP in Beijing has some excellent Chinese astronomers. I am sure they can have collaborations with NASA scientists that would be mutually beneficial. I realize this is not aerospace, but NASA is not just aerospace.

I submitted a piece from Physics Today to HN [1] a few days ago. The article describes how the scientific interaction between the US and China helped the Chinese nuclear program. For the record, I do not think the benefits from such a wide

I read Chomsky's comment about Bin Laden's "boasting" as a reasonable explanation of Bin Laden's actions. He is simply saying that just because he said he has done it does not necessarily means he actually did it, since Bin Laden stood to g

My apologies, I misunderstood the meaning of "simulation". I was thinking of a calculation where you compute the interactions between objects and evolve their positions and momenta accordingly. Celestia does not do this of course, it uses s

If you want to simulate a galaxy, the smallest scale that you can resolve is much much larger than size*2^(-128). Since you need floating point arithmetic for many other computations, increasing the precision in your coordinates will cost a

To make various computations, you generally need powers of a given quantity. It seems to me that when you take large powers for intermediate results, the precision in fixed point arithmetic will rapidly drop, no? Furthermore you need to put

Pricing something high can actually increase sales. There is an example in Cialdini's book "Influence", near the beginning of chapter 1. A jewelry store owner was trying to get rid of some items, instead of marking the price down, she marke

My answer to his question at the end of the essay would be "0, π and 2π". Strangely, this triple is the only one that looks nice to me, even though all of "3 and 3", "0 and 6" and "2 and 4" as well as coming up with a pair with long decimal
