I'm also detecting hints of non-native English in his writing which may make it even more effort. Though his Twitter account says he's based in Connecticut. Edit: Wow, shocked that I'm being received so negatively about this,

Wow, I browse with showdead and I see it ... I can understand having criticisms of HN and pg, and I understand being harshly critical when you find a serious security problem, but surely there's a better way to express both of these.

Rules and laws are for other people. A lot of people reading this comment having mistaken "fake it til you make it" or "better to not ask permission" for good life advice are responsible for perpetrating these attitudes

I've read about or seen interviews with people who refused. I am also aware that the vast majority do not, and would consider it unthinkable to refuse.

Ain't is also common in the US, but is stigmatized. In the US, it is regional to the east coast, both north and south. It is also common in African American speech.

This is a specific case of trying to imitate the rules of Latin, incorrectly. Another one that we misunderstand a lot is virus. It looks like the typical second declension thing ending in -us. It is actually a rare categorization of word, t

The plural of octopus is octopuses. But if you want to sound more latin, octopus is a third declension noun, and those have nominative plurals that tend to end in -es, rather than the second declension which ends in -us for singular or -i f

In the era of the key fob it's pretty automatic to lock the car every time. Some cars even literally do it for you. I hardly think of this, let alone get not great feelings about it.

Sorry this is going to be more impolite than most HN comments, but this person doesn't know what they're doing. WriteFile returns hardcoded TRUE. NtReadFile() returns a char*. NtWriteFile does a string compare if the filename is &

I feel that companies just repeat discredited strategies because they are conventional wisdom, and no amount of explaining why layoffs don't make sense will stop them from laying off. It's mostly about conformity. They heard that

Internally, NT first targeted Intel i860, not x86. This was a deliberate decision to break old assumptions. It was designed to be multiplatform from the beginning. The fact that it had an NT syscall layer but also a Win32 one, then formerly

People forget the excitement around alpha from the mid 90s. It was the first Linux port to non-x86 for example. It was a little bit before the AMD vs Intel wars and race to 1ghz kicked off, so it represented a challenge to Intel's mono

My comment was tongue in cheek. I'm not a web focused guy and I learned HTML long enough ago that I have no specific moral objection to tables. I used them in a quick personal project a few months ago.

I think I had it one major release off. It was probably the gtk3 era. I read comments on the mailing list that you basically shouldn't rely on Win32 support. You're right that gdk2 ramped up Win32 support, I remember that now.

Off topic, but I recently learned that "girl" in Middle or Old English originally referred to a child of either gender, and I believe only acquired its gender specific meaning in the late middle English or early modern period.

That's funny. Because I remember one of the changes from gtk-1.2 to gtk-2.0 (or maybe 2 to 3?) was to drop Win32 support. Which I at the time didn't like. We go full circle.

I think it made substantially more sense in the 1990s. For one, Gtk+ used to be advertised as a multi platform toolkit, with a port of GDK to Win32. Making Gtk+ widgets look like Win32 made sense for that. Secondly, there were two groups of

Sorry to reply again, but I just remembered we do have an example of software being "cancelled" like this. ReiserFS. The creator was convicted of murder and it went away. It was open source and could have been carried on by others
