I think real DevOps works here just fine as long as your organization allows the time for deep work. If you are writing application code with 0% of your brain lent to operational concern, you are writing it in a disconnected dream cloud and

You know the walled garden is put up with good reason -- to keep fraud and abuse out? And that very few are actually capable of doing such a job, and the software industry has continually demonstrated the lack of that capability.

Au contraire, AWS has a stable of foundational services that have not moved in a long time and a worthwhile knowing, no matter what service-du-jour gets rolled out. Not a moving target at all.

Not for WAF. The original article states that you must use API Gateway if you want AWS WAF.

Jamf is onerous to use. Are they still requiring two days of training with a purchase? Last time I tried to purchase the product, they would not let me skip two days of training. As a fast growing <10-engineer startup at the the time, I

All you have to do is open a separate Apple ID and open a business account with your local Apple store. They will happily bill you in alternate ways. As a one man band, you have no use for MDM. Apple Business Essentials simply has no value

Fastmail is a bargain for me. I’d pay $40/mo for super high quality email.

You really can’t beat Fastmail. No other provider comes close from when I researched a few years ago.

The downvotes prove the rampant Google fanboyism on HN. The YouTube app for AppleTV is exhibit #1 in Google's anticompetitive behavior.

Fuck YouTube and their AppleTV app. It's exhibit #1 in anticompetitive behavior -- ship a shitty, subpar app, for a premium service. I wish that Apple were to prohibit any custom video playing controls on AppleTV, but this crowd will r

RIP Sir Clive Sinclair! I grew up on a Soviet clone of the ZX Spectrum 48, the Hobbit! Many hours spent. Many games written. Used to write BASIC on graph paper before entering it in.

Kotlin’s closed/final by default is a huge flaw when working with a large codebase. Code is not left extensible by default. I don’t want to sprinkle my code with the open noise. False performance optimization, big maintenance/flex

That's because this "cannot do" definition of an addict is incorrect/harmful. This is the disease theory of addiction (addicts can't help themselves) and has been proven wrong/harmful in recent psychology.

This comment is on point! You have to be nicer/kinded to yourself. Life is hard/stressful enough as is. When you start feeling bad about yourself, as GP said, "I'm so terrible I can't stop checking my phone", y

Closed by default/final by default is a bad bad decision that reeks of premature optimization. No I don’t want to litter my code with “open” just to allow it to be extensible. Makes Kotlin a non-starters for me.

Thank god they've changed that. Preview or GA is much harder line, where you can't hide behind a beta label for cycles on end. You can see the language in that release "give your business the confidence." My point was th

Distributed computing and networks, amirite? I'm sorry, but if you can't see that ACID transactions don't scale over multiple machines, then of course you will bemoan about how a large database gives up your prized feature. E

That's because keeping track of request state is not free. Ask an edge router. If you have a request open, even though it's not doing CPU, that request has to be in a queue somewhere, tracked for a response that can be transmitted

My large disappointment with Google's Cloud Platform offering was lack of commitment to parity features. I am sorry but the concept of "Beta release level" is a complete misfire/mismatch for what an enterprise needs. For

I must be boring because I manage plain old (virtual) machines with a load balancer at the edge. It is easy as pie to manage and is easy to understand and secure. I build the clustering into relevant services as needed, because what it mean
