I think it was more like certain groups of influential diggers controlling the site vis-a-vis their combined power. Associations with powerful diggers (via friendship) also seemed to be a way to gain influence, which would've encouraged vot

Interesting mostly in a meta way. Did it ever make sense to have voting circles mean more than diversified voting on the site? If I had to choose an initial bias, I'd choose the latter. News.YC chooses neither, I guess.

Gerry Sussman... Good piece of trivia: In addition to creating the class, he taught the last (ever) offering of 6.001 last term at MIT. Another piece of trivia: Hal Abelson, the co-creator, was one of the big guys being 6.001's replacement

And to allay fears further down this thread, yes, the accelerometer is way sensitive enough for the game.

50/50 for MIT at large. Nowhere near that in Course VI, though.

There aren't any algorithms to find things in an unsorted array in less than worst case linear time. I think you're confusing search (for some value) with select (a value with a given index in the sorted array).

Just code towards your goal. Most of the theory of computer science that you'll need implemented along the way will be done for you via something low-level that you don't really need to worry about because it'll come for free (in python or

I'll prefix this reply with the fact that I'm a Scheme fan. But I would never try to code up a large project in anything related to LISP right now. It's awesome that you've put together your own framework, but at the same time kind of unfor

Just saw a movie. Awesome intravert sport, movie watching. Except for the whole leaving the house thing... Seeing Cloverfield makes me glad I just moved from NYC.

It's a moot point anyway because most of the time when you make a moral stand in your product you end up making the experience for its audience better. The tricky part is knowing which types of people you'll lose or gain based on those mora

Funny is, Microsoft's market cap is 30x Intuit's. Facebook's worth $15 billion? Slide's worth $500million. See? Ratios are easy!

Facebook was anticipating on the order of $30 million in profit, as I recall (serving out billions of pageviews is never cheap). Feel free to multiply all of your time estimates by three.

$500 million is 4 times as much revenue as Facebook anticipated for last year.

True. And what about eBay, Amazon, and the other huge internet sites that actually do make a ton of money and actually did have a business plan relatively soon in the game? Chopped liver?

I'd love to be the founder of a company that exits as big as those two 'loss leaders' did. And there's nothing saying they won't make it up (and more) in a few years.

Crazy how the top-selling album this week only moved 125k units. More proof that the record industry is really going to have to find a way to make money outside of CD sales.
