Dunno if you made this, but if so, cool. One thing, though: JPEG's with EXIF data specifying that they need rotation shouldn't be displayed as they come out in the file. Lots of sideways pictures...

Not sure what this has to do with hacker news, but it's about minorities, so I'm down. I found it odd that The Economist didn't really do any pondering on the economic part of these statistics. The out-of-wedlock birthrate is probably a lot

The number of recording artists/groups making money--that is, a profit--on tour is dwarfed by the ones trying to scrape by any other way they can ('real' jobs, selling cd's and other merch at shows, bar mitzvahs, etc.). Even a lot of the to

I really like the size decrease as the conversation goes deeper. Great UI touch. Is there no way to index old content?

Your post is one of only two uses on the web of the phrase "situational simile." However, it actually seems like a useful term. Did you make it up, or are you just one of the few cool kids to use it on the interwebs?

One of the more entertaining parts of the Google Tour. The master plan now looks a lot more complex nowadays.

Safari uses Apple's font rendering algorithms. They're intended to stay true to the shape of the letterforms without worrying too much about keeping them within the pixel grid. Check out Joel's explanation: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/it

Probably related to the infinite downside possibility when you're shorting. It's easier to lose a ton of your money when you're wrong.

This game is currently in full effect at MIT. I really assumed no one would have time to play it, what with all the psets, but no. Lots of people are into, and they're even trying to pull alums (read: me) in. Not sure how big a deal this so

MySpace and Facebook aren't making more than enough money. That's why FIM doesn't break out MySpace numbers and why Facebook raised a huge round. Business rolling in profit don't need anybody else's money.

My intent isn't to bat for MD5, really. But since you asked me, I'll point out that MD5 is actually not that bad if you want a deterministic string of randomly distributed bits. If you don't need all 128 bits, nobody's forcing you to keep t

I can't believe it's 2008 and we're still reading new stories about MD5 collision-resistance. We get it, anybody can manufacture N files with the same hash and different content. Don't use MD5 as a piece of your vote commitment scheme and
