I missed the whole memo on how MySpace is worse than Facebook. They've dealt with their (larger than Facebook) scaling issues with what appears to be industry leading uptime, they're the biggest domestic social network by about a factor of

I heard from a buddy who worked on IE7 while he was a summer intern that the IE team still had code from IE 1.0 sticking around.

I think there's probably a lot of precedent for "seasoned replacements" making a positive impact when it comes to technical infrastructure. Not that I can point you to any. But my sense is that most big sites on the web owe a good chunk of

Paul Buchheit attributed the "100 happy users" thing to Eric Schmidt, if I recall correctly.

Clarification on parent: One of the best parts about UTF-8 is that ASCII text is also valid UTF-8-encoded text.

Although Gladwell would argue that Lisp, too, was as much an invention as anything done with it afterwards, insofar as the person who invented, say, CLOS was simply discovering it (in McCarthy's terms) before someone else did.

Pissing contest, I know, but that doesn't necessarily hold at all top tier schools. At MIT I've found pretty much every professor to be willing to chat with students, whether just after class or at office hours. At the same time, I have not

I was about to refer you to AppJet, but apparently they're switching back from PHP to Javascript.

This article's worth reading just for the stock market metaphor. And the Artic Monkey references.

Could be a gambit to play at Yahoo!'s insecurity. You know, how you start acting like you're going out with another girl to make your ex jealous.

Check out San Jose State. I stayed there as an intern with Google. The place is nice, albeit sort of out of the way depending on where you want to be. Not sure if you could get similar rates as an individual, though.

Great UI. Really takes advantage of the blurring of the line between perception of responsiveness and perception of actual speed. I don't think it's that much faster in real terms than instantdomainsearch, but it feels like it's way speed

I disagree, at least in the general case. I believe everyone has a basic responsibility for the well-being of others (insofar as you can reasonably help), and so even if the negotiated agreement is bad I think it's more virtuous to end on g

The bottom line is so-so, but the top line's great for a company like Take Two. EA can afford to spend money to get hits, they just need more of them.

Doesn't speak well to her commitment to the company, but she probably was right about being owed more equity in the company, if only because her leaving really has taken out a good chunk of the value of the enterprise.

So sick. The scale of that is incredible. Facebook and MySpace don't make that much together in a year... And somehow this company is only worth $2B?

Last time I threw up a patch, it wasn't really all that well-received. In part because I didn't submit it on the "feature requests" thread? Without a real regex library, adding things to the 'markdown' parser in news.yc is pretty rough stuf

Not a bad comparison, but I feel like there's something off about it that I can't quite put my finger on it. I think maybe it's along lines of the fact that Apple is the type of company to create an object that you kind of revere for how it
