This is an engineering masterpiece. The electrical engineer in me is mind-blown. I love the inter-PCB BGA-style interface. Standoff, connector and shield all in one component. And the component density is stunning. Clean internal layout, re

My guesses: - Cheaper to produce / higher yields than an L shape? - LiIon batteries have a power density <-> energy density tradeoff. Perhaps the batteries have different chemistries so as to get the best of both worlds.

Funny, I thought you were talking about a different Google engineer. Back when I was contracting there we had two people on the project who lived on campus in converted vans. One was an engineer, the other a vehicle operator.

Not sure why you chose to illustrate this with a photo from over 50 years ago. I'd like to think that our understanding of earthquake safety has evolved since the 40s? 50s? whenever those structures were built.

I don't think we should take it for granted that it's prohibitively expensive to live in cities. That may be the state of metro areas in North America right now (SF, NYC, Vancouver) but historically this isn't a constant. Obv

Came here to say something similar. The URL/nav bar on mobile browers should really be at the BOTTOM of the screen.

have you had to do this? there's a catch-22 here in that depression makes it way harder to invest the time in finding professional help.

I would argue that this has been happening for a long time. Example - China's Special Economic Zone program. Districts which have lowered administrative and regulatory barriers, specifically designed to attract foreign capital. Shenzen

Even within Alameda county I've noticed huge differences. Oakland's tap water is great -- similar to SF's, yet Fremont has to deal with weird mineral-laden tap water.

I think it's to the point now where the method of render isn't as critical -- many are capable of photoreal renders, but subtle details, like the way objects settle, or how rooms that are actually lived in are worn. Bonus: I thoug

Breakthrough therapy, huh? Let's remember that the DEA head (John C. Lawn) in the 80's forced a Schedule I classification, ignoring the recommendation of two separate hearings, and a successful federal lawsuit to do so. This was

There are lots of examples of Americentrism, but I don't think this is one. The eclipse was basically only visible from the United States. For reference, here's the chart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SE

Why are flash LIDAR the way forward? Is it just packaging, and the ability to blend the sensor with the lines of the car? Cost? It certainly isn't image quality AFAIK. (as an aside: I don't buy the moving parts argument -- a moder

I've seen you plug flash LIDAR (especially ASC's unit) several times here, but is anyone actually using it on SDVs? I've seen things that could have been flash LIDAR on test cars, but never as the primary sensor. I worked on

not sure if this is meant facetiously, but one tenet of shop safety is that you don't wear gloves when using tools that could snag and wrap your hand around them. drill presses, grinders, table saws.

If you're a novice (or a well meaning parent), it's difficult to know the difference between a functional instrument and a 'toy' version, and it's easy to end up with something that's barely functional that cau

I was on BART a few weeks ago and had two tech dudes strike up a conversation about JIRA directly across me, shouting over the din of rail noise. It can get obnoxious.

Easy enough to do. I think the biggest single culprit is cumulative damage from sitting down or walking with my phone in my pocket with headphones plugged in. Second biggest one is catching the cable on stationary objects. Doorknobs, shel

Phone connectors are rubbish, ancient technology. The only thing they have going for them is the network buy-in from literally 140 years of legacy.[1] They are fine in static audio applications, but their performance on mobile devices is ab

We get spoiled a bit by how amazing noise suppression in modern vehicles is. A modern car rolling 60 MPH down the highway makes almost no engine noise, it's all aerodynamic whoosh and tire noise. Pretty impressive for a machine that&
