I've been taking notes as I go, going to put together a slide preso at some point with stuff I learned in the process. I'm a lazy engineer, so I avoid doing tedious hand-crafted stuff. I'm using 30pt museum board for the flap

That's just for the enclosure. It looks like it comes out to 60-70$ depending on how you build it. I'm targeting sub $50, but it's tough. Good resource though, didn't know about those cheap geared stepper motors.

They're really cool! The original Solari board modules are mega expensive though. I looked at getting some to make a clock, and it probably would have cost me in the thousands. As an indirect result I now have a project in the works t

I helped a friend-of-a-friend debug some control circuits on an ancient drill press. I wondered "why not throw a microcontroller and some SSRs in here instead of dealing with all this goofy relay logic?" Then I realized that I was

I always did it in a dark bag, which doesn’t photograph well either. Looks and sounds like you’ve got your hands stuck in a nylon duffel somehow.

Someone else wrote the comment I meant to, essentially doing the math to show that one would need an awkwardly large solar panel to power something like a quadrotor drone.

To elaborate, solar energy hitting the Earth’s surface is about a kilowatt/m^2 if conditions are perfect. If you were able to convert solar power at the maximum theoretical PV efficiency (the Shockley-Queisser limit, 33.7%), you’d need

That doesn't hold up, at least with my example. The glovebox latch on most vehicles is a couple of bits of stamped metal and a spring. By making it electrically actuated, Telsa necessitated adding a branch to the wiring harness, along

I think they went overboard with the "everything must happen via the center console" interface strategy. From an aesthetic perspective, it is Very Pretty, but it's kind of hard to accept that the way to open a glove compartme

It's kind of interesting to look at the marketing photographs on their site. Very keyed to the masculine eye. Photo next to a military cargo aircraft's landing gear. Two beautiful women in and next to the car, but only as passenge

They just announced it today. They don't have a probe yet. They have to design and build and test all of the equipment and systems that are going to go into space. I think it's pretty reasonable for this to take 6 years.

Happens to loads of people. I hear about people getting shot and having someone drive them to the hospital to avoid the ambulance fee. I was in a motorcycle accident and declined to even go to a hospital because I was uninsured at the time.

There's nothing on a jump bike that can lock the rear wheel while in motion. The motor is in the front, and the brakes are operated by hand. I have ate it on one while crossing train tracks while at max power, as that combination of

There's a company called Rivian that's working on an electric pickup. After doing engine work and chasing leaks on my older Tacoma, I admit I've entertained the thought of swapping in a Tesla powertrain. I think it's a g

Apple are making a series of design trade offs. What portion of laptop buyers will be swayed by the ability to swap their RAM out? Will they sell more units by designing for interchangeable RAM or by being able to make their unit 2mm thinne

I've seen this so many times. The introverts and smokers I can explain, but to this day I have no idea why people congregate in the kitchen even when there's nothing specific to draw them in there (food, etc.)

I had no idea it was a thing. I thought I had ADHD-PI with a side of anxiety, but I’m blown away to find that RSD has a super strong link to ADHD. I think it’s treatable. Anecdote: I knocked doors for the Hillary campaign in Denver in 2016

Depends on the unit. On some designs (e.g. Velodyne HDL-64) the unit is split into two sections. The whole upper section, along with all the optics and some of the electronics, spins at 10-15 Hz, which naturally tends to shed precipitation
