Surely for a web app dependency that is pretty much answered by how your app is deployed. For a Flask app it’s likely one line in your requirements.txt, probably a virtualenv in there too. Honestly, it’s not that hard

Editorialised headline has a typo I think. Not “affects”, but “effects”. And why not “impacts” per the original?

As someone who doesn’t have a +1 number I find it hard to take this comment seriously. But could it be possible that some state department employees work outside the US?

“The goal is to achieve ignition – a point at which the energy generated by the fusion process exceeds the total energy input.” “The experiment, conducted on 8 August, fell just short of that mark; the input from the lasers was 1.9 megajoul

“Normal” meaning I think the US format, the format that confuses a lot of people elsewhere. YYYY-MM—DD is the safest, but in the UK at least we would interpret xx-xx as DD-MM

After a former colleague of mine, Stuart’s rule of system naming: The whizzier the name, the crappier the system. Inside corporates the correlation is uncanny.

As a Brit, got to say that I wish we used Europlugs here. Ours are so bulky (a pain for anything portable), and the US ones seem so flimsy. Also, there ought to be a museum of hotel electrics. Weird light switch behaviour, dumb (pre phone c

Similar but different: one emphasises social decision making, the other, economics. The domain of Goodhart’s law is economic policy.

Edit: that link seems to justify the title but it doesn’t fit the main article. Seriously misleading title though. A default is a well-defined event. “Defaults” implies that it has happened. “Teetering” is something else. Needs fixing.

Nice! I was thinking I’d get round to trying some syntax-related experiments one day. Would this be an easier platform than (say) cpython for stuff like that?

I would borrow the ‘where’ clause from Haskell, reducing the need for assignments in imperative code. I can imagine it as a postfix operator on its preceding expression (its code, not just its value).

My only quibble with this excellent article is on the self-reinforcing nature of learning loops. Organisation learning has a spotty track record. Without the right goals, support, and attention, it so often runs out of energy.
