I would argue that it has waxed and waned. 50s most music was written by a composer. Have a songwriter behind a big name like Frank Sinatra. 60s has a surge of bands producing their own music in a smallish crew (Beatles, Beach Boys). But th

There’s an infamous anecdote with Jobs doing this. Tharanos had the same “two teams” story. A lot of CEOs who think they’re the next Steve Jobs, don’t understand their own tech, and presume the solution to their technical problems is a lack

I've always done this as well. It was policy at one finance job, and it just stuck after that. Then I had an ex-girlfriend get quite upset with me for always locking my computers when I was away from them.

I really think this misses the mark. Grad students don't treat their prof as infallible - at least good labs. In most labs, the grad students are the ones actually doing the work and research. The prof is just the marketing man. And a

Lol. “Don’t buy the things with exploitative labor.” Good fucking luck. Bury your head in a hole and produce squash or some shit. There is no ethical consumption under captialism. Blah blah blah.

He didn’t invent them. He didn’t do jack shit. My opinion isn’t irrelevant. Anytime someone brings up his supposed “achiements” I’ll be happy to bring up how he stole those very achievements. His very colleagues claim he had no involvement

The point is rather that determining “objective abuse” is entirely tangential. No way to determine if my story (or any others) is true. But in academia it can be true, and when it is true, there is nothing that can be done. To a further ext

In terms of homeless folks I’ve met in the US, they do the same. They just use the money to buy drugs / alcohol and sleep outside because the recycling money isn’t enough for rent, but it’ll get you fucked up enough you won’t care.

13 years for turnaround on bad results isn’t abysmal in my view. Science is hard and will take a long time. Getting people used to that seems impossible though.

I’ve always wondered how people dismiss academic abuse. Now I know! It’s “cause the students are just lazy / expect to be told what to do”. Bullshit. My previous academic advisor would take out his aggressions and frustrations on his s

Retro computing communities are pretty active at the moment. You should be able to get copies of software via disk drive emulation. There’s various SD Card options out there for the C64, so I imagine the Amiga is similar. I was playing with

Funnily enough, I’ve had research faculty in top tier universities say this sort of thing to me recently. “Graphics is an industrial field. There’s just no money in it.”

I don’t know. I cant take anyone seriously who says it’s hard to type ./configure make At a prompt, then install missing libs. Unless you have to maintain updates regularly, “It’s just so hard” seems like a damn meme.
