You can tell Brøderbund was a small company at the time because they weren't actively designing the product around avoiding tech support calls.

I once read a story on Reddit about a payroll processor with an utterly unholy mess of a system. One day, they get a customer called "Select", and the entire system stopped working.

Google's approach to open source does feel very much like virtue signaling rather than constructive adherence to the ideology. The build system for any Google project is notoriously terrible. I recently attempted to build Skia; even af

In his biography, Jobs bemoaned the utilitarian brutalism of the medical devices he relied on in his final years of life. He absolutely would've oversaw the development of slicker accessibility.

In my experience, there's an academic world, and a practical world, and never the 'twain shall meet. The academic world knew without experience that higher-level structured concurrency was the way to go. It took the practical indu

For decades, America has embraced a civic nationalism over a European-style ethnic nationalism. This is that certain notions of freedom and responsibility, not blood and soil, were the real ties that bind. A sense of community can transcend

Qbasic was never quite the professionals' system like C and Assembly was, but looking back, I was at least using the same system that non-technical managers who regretted firing the developers were clumsily banging out solutions with.

I also started with Qbasic. I learned from the examples in the on-line help system. The first one I vividly recall running and changing was the CIRCLE example; probably the first code I ever wrote.

I'm also old enough to remember how buggy DoubleSpace was and, truth be told, that still kinda puts me off disk compression.

The rise of nationalist populism, although something I still disagree quite contentiously with, really begins making more sense when opinions like this start leaking out.

This is one thing most people don't understand. If someone is selling you a financial instrument with >6-7% annual returns, it's as ridiculous as someone selling you a time machine or the cure to death. The top 500 companies by

Is it truly "censorship" though, if one is so aggressively distasteful and difficult to deal with that nobody wants to do business with them? Daily Stormer was taken down as a result of 0 court orders. If I'm on someone'

We've had a "flying car" for generations. It's called the helicopter. It was even able to land on top of Pan Am's headquarters in NYC. The problem, of course, is the high level of training required to operate such a

It's a dying art because now even the cheapest SoCs are capable of running full Linux with a big stack like Node. The Pi Zero is $5 and capable of all these things. Perhaps the last refuge is battery-powered microcontrollers.

The appeal of retro console/computer dev is essentially an exercise in constrained programming. Systems of these era had extremely constrained specifications, and making the most of them is an art in itself.

It's disappointing that SST died off the way it did. In the 1960s, the 747 was originally designed as a stopgap between subsonic and supersonic, which was viewed as the next inevitable step. Unfortunately, in a hamfisted effort to stud

Public services, especially those run by China, don't exactly have a stellar record of being uncorrupt and accountable. What if the system is abused to shut down a competitor on the surreptitious "donation" of another company
