Are you one of those people who are more interested in learning about how other people think? If so, it's odd that you're telling me how I think. If you scroll up a bit, you'll see that it's precisely to avoid "war" that I want to emphasi

If you're used to some system of indentation, for some definition of "used to", then it is either objectively true that you'd most likely be better off switching, or it is objectively true that you most likely wouldn't be. If this truth can

What cultural influences are you talking about? Can you give an example? Specifically, what influences that aren't just a parameter within the framework of evolutionary psychology?

I've read it, a long time ago. IIRC, there is competition among the very few breeders, but the non-breeding workers are in fact identical. The social cohesion parent was talking about happens among the workers.

Tech lifestyle options and programming languages are topics where plenty of objective truths can be established. Why else would anyone want to waste air and keystrokes? Do a thought experiment: come up with a topic that is purely non-object

A beehive or an ant colony is actually one organism, from the point of view of evolution. The individual insects are genetically identical within a collective.

"When I post on HN I’m trying to convince people to adopt my opinion." That might be your problem right there. When I post on HN, I try to move the discussion closer to truth, which is often not the opinion I started with.

I'm afraid too--that a lot of smart people are flushing their time down the toilet. It seems like all things that actually bring us closer to singularity (if the word means anything at all) are being done by people who've never heard of it,

History is full of precedents where a certain kind of deal routinely has the parties trying to screw each other, and then gradually this kind of deal becomes based on trust, and everyone is better off. Attitudes like yours get in the way of

This discussion about the foundation of society is like two people arguing whether the foundation of life is evolution or sunshine. The only real point of contention is how to define "foundation", and any given answer will stem from ideolog

How to read a "Malcolm Gladwell Bestseller": start in the middle; read 20 pages or so; see sloppy reasoning and general lack of substance; don't read it or any of the author's other books again. You'd save yourself a lot of time if you did

I think your assumption that you should start with a foundation is wrong. Foundation is good, but the best way to it is to focus on other things. If you have a discipline A and a discipline B, and knowing A will help you a great deal with B

Title makes it sound like the pictures are of how tourists and locals look, which isn't too interesting. Too bad. I'd have loved to see a discussion of this.

Well, quality of life for the average Russian changed, not that anyone cares about that. And those who were gangsters in the the 90s are not just "now" in government. I'll repeat myself: nothing is wrong now that wasn't wrong before. Why al

There are better things to invest in than Russia, but where does the "could not pay me enough" attitude come from? There's nothing wrong with Russia right now that hasn't been as wrong or more wrong in the 90s, when there was much less mean

The problem isn't sensationalism. It's that I don't know what the article is about. Why not put "Zuckcerburg: " before it, so that I and about half the people on this site instantly know not to waste any more time?

Probably a dumb question, but since I don't know the answer, I'll ask it: why not blow up the entire reservoir with a big thermonuclear bomb? Or otherwise set it on fire such that it all burns up before getting out?
