Yes, down 30% from my original offer TC from about a year ago. Meanwhile, new hires are getting offers 15% higher than my original offer. I’ll likely leave this year unless the company does something about it.

Apparently, folks with offers received an email two weeks ago, when the hiring freeze was announced, saying no offers would be rescinded. Did management change their minds in just two weeks?

Companies doing this are shooting themselves in the foot by not letting the market dictate pay. They either will waste a ton of money by giving everyone Bay Area-level pay, or will just be unable to hire in high cost of labor locations with

I agree with all your points. However, Google Meet screen sharing regularly stops working on Chrome for Mac, so some widely used tools do suck in 2022.

I work at a company that has similar practices to what you describe (we don’t run our services locally). While it’s hard to get used to at first, I think the silver lining is that it forces everyone to write good unit tests, since it’s the

It’s not existing grants being bumped, but the ranges offered for yearly perf-based RSU awards. For example, if the range for a level was 0 - 10K, it is now 0 - 12.5K.

You don’t deal with them. You just feel lucky that you dodged the bullet of working at that company and move on.

Same. I struggle to understand how some engineers don’t like to code. It’s definitely my favorite part of the development process.

This is part of the fun of customizing a small keyboard. You experiment with different key layouts until you find the perfect one for you and learn it, making small adjustments along the way. I currently use a 36-key Draculad and the most f

Can you elaborate on why you think it’s terrible to read in plaintext compared to other languages? I’ve been writing a lot of Kotlin recently and the only memorable extra hints (compared to other languages/IDEs) I see on IDEA are named

My thoughts exactly. Every year, the Standards of Business Conduct training talks about not bribing foreign officials and devs are like “who the hell is ever in that position anyway?”.

We are still in the “pandemic reality” and just starting to transition out of it. If/when the majority of that 2/3 of people go back to the same office, remote employees will go back to being second class citizens. Basically, I

If you need to run the code to make sure it works, you probably need tests for it. Tests + CI makes running code being reviewed pointless.

It is not only a function of value being produced, but of supply and demand. If Google wants to hire a certain level of engineer in a certain location, they have to pay $750K, just because those engineers have other options that pay as mu

In true remote companies everything happens on Slack channels and meetings are minimal. If you want to see what a team is up to, you just have to lurk their Slack channel. Basically almost everything becomes more visible because of Slack.

Microsoft is doing something similar where you can choose hybrid work or fully remote. Personally, I think, with hybrid work, fully remote workers will go back to being second class citizens at those companies if most people choose to go ba

What you described has been available for a long time. The old Facebook Pay (i.e. the ability to send payments to your friends via ACH) has been available in Messenger for at least 5 years (probably even longer). This new Facebook Pay seems
