I'm so incredibly sorry about that. The contract for InputStream.read is very clear, that was needlessly sloppy. New version is up. Also includes the unit test that should have been there in the first place. grumble http://3banana.com/pi

We have a trivial implementation that does a full backup and prepends the date/time stamp to the backed up filename. We call it from crontab to run once a day with the following: java -jar s3backup.jar /etc/iptables-save /etc/lighttpd/light

For customer data, we do daily automated encrypted backups to S3. We also do more frequent backups to an internal server during the day. Our code is in SVN, which is also backed up to S3. We have scripts that take a vanilla etch build and p

Looks good. Small thing, you want to put JavaScript on the bottom of your page so that the page gets displayed faster. YSlow is a great tool for this, http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/ I also see that you are hosting prototype yourself. W

I love IntelliJ IDEA, it kicks some serious ass: http://www.jetbrains.com/ The last time I used VS was with VC++ 6.0, so no clue how IntelliJ compares.

Just work on the product! It's way too easy to spend time on things that aren't core to your business. Don't worry about where to open a bank account, where to incorporate, etc. This can all be fixed later on, and won't prevent you from mak

I agree, that's why we extensively use FLOSS. It is nice being use the same innovations that power Google (Guice), Yahoo (Hadoop), Facebook (Thrift). I have a friend who does a lot of C# and he claims there are some really interesting thin

Technically you don't own FLOSS software either, never having to pay a license fee is very attractive. Free is nice, but we still pay for commercial software. We spend $600 for each license of IntelliJ because it woks better for us than Ecl

This seems like a no brainer for any startup since they give you a free MSDN Premium subscription, which means you get a copy of MS Office, Exchange and Dynamics. Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite with MSDN Premium is usually $10,93

Thanks, we've looked at those before and they still seems a bit too complex. I do like their audio-text bridge. We are building something even simpler, a personal syslog synced across phone/web/command line.

I appreciate the opportunity, thank you. Fundamentally we view notes as a stream like a log file or Twitter. You will have one place to easily and quickly dump everything, then be able to grep out the relevant information, and then late bin

I wasn't happy with any of the solutions out there so we built our own. We treat notes as a stream and you categorize notes using hashcodes. We have an iPhone and Android client so you can easily include pictures in your notes. We aren't li

My understanding is that each module (Photos, Notes, etc) has its own feed which gets aggregated to create the main News feed. If each module is responsible for producing its own feed, it seems like this problem isn't too difficult to solve

Thrift seems to have a fair amount of activity: http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/incubator/thrift/trunk/ What I would fault them for is poor documentation. Google does a much better job on this front.

Yep. We looked at the BDB's RPC system but are probably going to end up going with Thrift for RPC. Other than the lack of documentation, Thrift seems pretty killer.
