I used to work at Kozmo launching their facilities and new markets, and I can say the brand still resonates with those that used it almost 13 years later. I have a messenger bag from the firm which I use from time-to-time and every time I d

I'd suspect it helps do 2 things - marginal VCs die sooner. This is already happening but more competition for deals hurts VCs who don't bring a lot to the table. This either brings in new smarter blood or right sizes the industry

Absolutely fair critique. Cambridge Associates and Preqin are primary data providers in this world, but in talking to our VC customers, we've heard that sample size, reporting bias (funds doing well may be more inclined to participate)

The returns are abysmal primarily. They lag Wall Street (while taking much more risk) http://www.geekwire.com/2013/vc-returns-improve-10year-horiz... This may sort itself out on its own, however, as LPs are investing l

This has been tried multiple times before (a startup funding marketplace) but all have failed because they couldn't build out the two-sided network. AL is the first to solve this. They have quality investors and startups (the 2 critica

Thx for the comment. We are updating the brief with all the zeros as we have the data. You are right that the line would point down if all failures raised a lot of money at the seed/Series A stage, but that's not the case. This in

To clarify, Fred's post has no data - just a statement of an inverse correlation between funding and success.

Sorry, but I don't understand this comment. If exit size is not one of the primary metrics VCs look at and how they define success, I'm at a loss for what would be. More specifically, how do you think USV and Fred define success?

Thanks for the comment. 1) We include asset sales/talent acquisitions but yes, private company data is imperfect. That said, we have the best in the biz (highly biased) 2) Runway in months and millions is semantics. If you have more mi

I think you need to look at this from Fred Wilson's perspective as a VC. Exit is the only the measure of success. It is how he and every VC is ultimately incentivized by their LPs. The more exits and the larger those exits, the more

He is a VC, and a good one, so success = exit valuation by definition. This is implicit when a VC is talking about success. Fred talks about he defines success here - http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/06/how-we-me

The analysis is only looking at whether there's a strong negative correlation between initial funding and startup success, using exit valuation as a measure, as this was Fred Wilson's assertion. Of course, this is not meant to be
