Legally that is not a copyright violation. There are examples where this is likely, and companies make efforts to prove this no copying occurred. I think this is called a 'clean room' implementation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clea

I guess there are a few kinds of arguments about the right approach. Legal, economic and religious. At lest the religious argument are the one I value most. One concept is that ideas should be free. Another is that ideas are property whi

It seems to me that it is the obscurity of source code that enables copyright violation. If software could not be copyright unless it was registered with the library of congress, then the library could run a filter on all new arrivals and c

Microsoft have so far not advocated competing systems. The initial release of the iPod only interfaced to a Apple computer. Oracle makes a lot of money. Microsoft likes money. At some point being more open may be a Microsoft strategy. Certa

My understanding is that REST imposes a bunch of restrictions about how an API is suppose to work. For example the idea that you can just communicate a single base URL and document formats, and other urls are deduced from that. Which add c

Go on Cobra for a while, then take the full time role before cobra expires. A bit off topic, but it seems like the US health care system is reducing labour market flexibility here.

This is how I think about it. Imagine you have a block box that calculates a interest rate futures convexity adjustment. That is for an OTC forward you have one fair value and for a future you have a different fair value because the future

Now that Wikileaks has given them a good basis for their judgement, it is up to the Mexican people to do their job and get rid of the corrupt Mexican officials. Isn't this what was part of the discussion about Tunisia about? Then they can r

Productive investment means spending cash on something, like property, R&D, or plant and equipment. I don't see how this is the same as hoarding cash. There is a psychology that iPads, and to an even greater extent iPhones, are a short

As other pointed out that is payroll tax, not income tax. The differences in tax between the US and Australia are not so much in the headline rates as in the deductions. In the US mortgage interest on a home you live in is tax deductible. A

You need to take into account what you get in addition to what you pay. In American those taxes provide a strong military. Most of the rest of the world are very poorly equipped by comparison. Other countries get health care and education

Software stasis aka Java, seems to me more silly than software trends. I can't see any good reason reason to stay with Java when Scala exists. I recently started using C#, VS and TFS after many years with Java and Python, SVN, and IntelliJ

I think Intel would be the company to give it a shot. They were part of thing Nokia walked away from. Android uses Linux, you don't have to write an OS from completely from scratch.

The Mac Mini is cheap. At various times the iPod was about as 'cheaper than the competition' as the iPad is now. The iPod touch has been cheap relative to comparable products. The Nintendo 3D hand held is launching at $350 here.

When does a thinner iPad matter? When holding an iPad up as a book a lighter iPad matters, and it is 15% lighter. When you pack it away the iPad gets thicker anyway because you stick a case around it.
