You are correct, the end of the article mentions a driving wheel "fifty-eight inches in diameter". These are most certainly "high wheel" bikes.

This seems like a great use of notifications unlike so many apps where they exist mainly to promote compulsively habitual usage.

Thanks for the perspective, checking for notifications could be even more of a distraction in some cases!

Your response surprises me, I subscribed to the notifications for less than a day before I unsubscribed. If you don't mind me asking, how many a day do you get and why do you like getting the notifications?

Wow, TIL. I knew South Korea had some internet censorship, but it definitely is a lot higher than I thought. That changes the context of the article a lot!

I doubt what they are doing is causing more harm than opportunity cost. The things they mentioned help in the short term. While internet addiction is still in contention there already are empirically tested treatments that can do a lot bett

It is great that they are recognizing this for the issue it is. Because technology is an inevitable part of most of our lives going cold turkey won't work. How do they deal with that?

It would definitely take some changes to make it work at an OS level, but Blender's modular window organization system would be awesome for more uses! It definitely is power user only, such a UI style would overwhelm most users with th

I have been thinking about this too. I agree that time is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to measuring efficiency. Do you think measuring how many to do list items someone completes would be a better metric?

I don't think people should have downvoted you for this, it is a reasonable question to ask! Consider that their core application's user facing functionality is not the most complex in the world, but they deploy it for over 1.5 bi

Writing is the key, I wrote in 10 programming languages and lisp still looked alien to me. It was only once I was forced to write out examples in a programming languages class that it started making sense. You really have to try writing in

I agree that being the default is an unfair advantage, but there is a grey zone for sure. Most applications we use have defaults of some sort, so what cutoff should we use to determine the unfair ones consistently?

Of course, that makes perfect sense. It is the number of days off being so low combined with things like this: http://money.cnn.com/2015/03/09/news/japan-work-salaryman/ that make me truly concerned

That's just scary. It definitely shows how much culture can change/warp our ideas about existence. Although that few days off probably is a significant factor in heightened Japanese suicide rates.

They do claim the quality of responses is improving. Will it get to the point where they can send responses without trainer approval? Who knows, but if they can get to that point for a majority of responses then it might work.

Not to mention an article that isn't total crap!? It is pleasantly surprising to read an article from buzzfeed and have it not be dredged up sludge of the internet.

That is an important consideration. If you are committed to doing it though, the cost savings are high. So high that unless your opportunity cost is over $100 for the hour of mixing the ingredients it will make sense.

Thanks for putting this out there though. It was valuable to read and learn from this since I will probably end up implementing similar things in the future. It definitely seems like a valuable thing to post experimentation like this.

It depends how cost sensitive you are. If you have an extra hour a month to mix the ingredients you can mix your own healthier version for half the cost. Definitely a tradeoff worth making for some people.

Good point, but by itself restarting the timer isn't much of a deterrent (at least to me). It makes me wonder if a better incentive might exist so that you can pause the timer but with a weightier tradeoff.

Out of curiousity, why do you want to stop the timer? To me the point seems to commit to lay out a specific segment of time to be productive and holding to the commitment helps. I imagine you have a different perspective on this though.

The two are not totally incompatible. If you can decouple segments of huge projects, you can mock input and get quick feedback on the specific segment you are developing. Insanely long builds still exist today, I know of and have worked on

In contrast to all the cynicism I see in other comments, this is awesome! Even if it doesn't happen to everyone, I find anyone who can manage to survive building and pursuing their passion to be inspirational. It reminds me that even i

The general improvements they mention do look good for the U.S. space industry. It says something about the recent state of congress that my first question is quite cynical: What compromises and hidden gotchas aren't we hearing about i

Cool! Out of curiosity, have you come up with ways to monetize this long term? I ask this because I hope there is a way to support and still see this type of content for years to come.

Have you worked on visualizations such as those in the article, or do you have a different position? I am very interested in this industry, but I haven't met anyone with experience there yet.
