Speaking as student in kung fu of 10 years and a teacher for 5, I can say this does happen, and it does work. When sparring, I had several instructors find a weakness in me, and exploit that weakness until it went way. They never abused me,

Invoke dynamic is a nice start, but it too is geared towards Ruby/Python style dynamism. It does almost nothing for Clojure.

Linux (the kernel) has been aware of this result for a long time. Here's a thread from 2001, where Linus says "I would, for example, suspect that a "correct" optimization strategy for 99% of all real-world cases (not benchmarks) is: if it

I love Reg's writing. It's consistently good and well thought out. But man do I cringe every time I see him do backflips to hack around the warts in Ruby. I don't understand why he spends so much effort trying to work around fundamental p

My startup is using Clojure, for a webapp that is heavy in AI/statistics. Yes, compojure is early, but for us it has been totally worthwhile. A lisp that has 1) a fast implementation 2) excellent support for parallelization and 3) well supp

PAIP is a good book, but personally, my mind was blown more by SICP and On Lisp. Both of those had more unique content and "lisp magic". When I can find the time, I want to read Purely Functional Datastructures. Clojure and PFD are the firs

My hack: run bittorrent during work time. Every site gets a lot slower. For me, the increase in latency makes distractions less enjoyable, but full access is still there if I really need it. On a few occasions, I've found important work-rel

The war file and swank shouldn't be mutually exclusive, I just haven't bothered with a .war because by default Compojure starts Jetty itself, and I didn't want to bother with compiling the .war and restarting the server to test changes. Onc
