Excellent news. The screenshots heavily imply to me that they've ported the HL2 engine (and HL2, portal, TF2, L4D) to OSX. I haven't had a windows machine at home for several years, because of that, I shifted most of my gaming to consoles.

You're absolutely right, but as a developer, package management makes a significantly more pleasant experience. I also really hate how every OSX app has it's own way of doing updates. Even if the OSX makes desktop apps not need dependencies

That's been a good description of Linux UI since OSX first appeared. Before that, it was an unholy bastardization of Windows.

IANA security expert, but stuff like this makes me believe it is never possible to secure native code. If you want a secure system, build a VM using a strict language like Haskell. Is that a fair statement?

If you take the presentation literally, yes it was overblown. However, I think he made a few very insightful points: 1) Understanding psychological factors is extremely powerful, and probably even more important than good game design. i.e.

My link empirically demonstrates that all 7(!) constructs behave differently, regardless of what foo.class says. I personally have been burned by the differences between them, so I'll continue to support people differentiating between them,

There's more to Q&A than just the consumer internet. There's the things people find on Yahoo Answers today, and then there's everything people want answers for, whether Yahoo Answers has a category for it or not. The second is an order

Exactly. Also, if you're a professional software developer, even your resume isn't a good description of what you are an expert on, so their one line description isn't adequate. If I say I'm an expert on "linux", that could mean linux kerne

The Q&A wars haven't even started, and I say that as someone who runs a Q&A site. Yes, Yahoo has tons of traffic, but 1) they're already being overtaken by answers.com 2) SO identifies Software as being underserved by existing solut

To be pedantic, scheme is garbage collected, and several use a VM. PLT already has weak references, and the author assumes the Scheme implementation already has them. As far as I can tell, this is somewhat like a weakHashMap, except each ep

How do I get in on that? I can't exactly call Google and say "hey, I'm willing to sell my pre-revenue startup for $FU_MONEY" (that offer is for real, btw, if any Googlers are reading :-) )

I'm currently in that boat. It's tough. I've been at it 1.5 years, and I'm still optimistic. One thing that made things significantly better was moving from full-time to part-time on my day job. I did that about six months ago. It helped si
