Inequality of opportunity is a much bigger problem than inequality of, say, income. An ideal community is a place where every individual's contributions are enabled to the maximum. Capitalistic economies start out that way for a while,

Yes! Everything else that goes into a product is usually a clear decision, so "everything" that could ever be studied and discussed has a lot of facets into it. When one of those debatable issues undergoes a breakthrough in resear

For all we know, our current version of science could be as off the mark to some possible formulation as neanderthal's version of the world is to us. Engineering works on top of what 'model' is available. Engineering even wor

Robots, if they get free will, will work for their own goals, by virtue of evolution. If they never reach that threshold, we could find ourselves in either one of two broad scenarios: Personal Jets or Personal Computers. Personal Robots are

It's about how much the language intrinsically prevents the compiler from optimising the output. Think Javascript versus asm.js, same language, one is just a subset of the other, completely different performance outcomes for the JIT co

On a little less serious note, I hope Haskell and C++ merge into something beautiful. Peak performance (par aliasing) and peak expressivity/safety.

This is the way I "understood" linear algebra. I even encoded it here in a small c++ header file when I used to think it wise to implement these things yourself: https://github.com/arithma/mat44/blob/

"6" Was this number written by a human or a computer? If you sift through a stream of mumbo jumbo written by a thousand chimps and selectively extract meaningful words, is it written by chimps or selected by humans. That is just t

Looking down on a right-handed spiral stair case you have to go counter-clockwise to go down, or clockwise to go up. Rotating the spiral along it's axis changes nothing. Rotating the spiral 180 deg around any axis perpendicular to its

In a parametric curve, a derivative of zero may indicate a cusp, which I feel is where the comparison is coming from. I only read your comment and article but didn't see the video, so this comment may be off.

There are two ways to interpret the lecture. - Whatever you work on, should be really great, otherwise why are you doing it? - Do things fearlessly, since fear is the most limiting constraint researchers (or anyone) impose on themselves. I

You can encode it in the Bitcoin blockchain. Lots of people will not like what you've done. You can also try to get it in some popular torrent, and have it live off with as many people as possible.

Why would you want to remove the framework? This would just be a huge waste of effort for no gain, as the grandparent shared. A decent un-bloated framework would account most of the time to a half-assed image. Not worth the trouble.

You plug your code into a framework. You plug a library into your code. I think this definition is a good starting point for thinking about the difference between a framework and a library.
