I don't have data on "diversity" as such, but I tend to give extra points to candidates who speak multiple languages. It's not just an indicator of intelligence. A team with broad "cultural literacy", in my experience, tends to create softw

Comparing a Rails library to a bridge isn't quite right. Most things lone hackers write are bike sheds and family homes. No one builds a bridge alone. You want a legacy? Move up the food chain and start discovering new data structures and a

"We form discrete groups from discrete sets of people, generally with little overlap." This is true for some people. Anyone who grew up in a small town, a tightly-knit religious culture, or most of Latin America, for that matter, might have

It does appear fast, but I'm withholding judgement. I'm not certain if it's doing caching tricks or whether their parser really is 10x faster. It certainly is CPU-bound, which is as good as it gets, and it's more stable in terms of memory u

Lately I've been trying to get into performance profiling research. Also, statistics. I've been programming full-time for, uh 15 years now. Holy shit. If anything programming gets harder but more enjoyable as time goes on. If it doesn't you

I learned that one by accident. I used to do open mike standup (really) and would amuse myself by composing bits talking out loud during long commutes. I couldn't write them down so I would end up composing/practicing a piece 40 or 50 times

I think you nailed the problem I had with this too. The future is not measured by years, technology, or economics. It's measured by how much it disagrees with the past about what is and is not important.

MySQL has this in the form of the startup option innodb_txn_commit. It performs all writes to memory and flushes them to disk in 1-second batches. It's a good way to scale up to 000's of writes per second per machine.

40 years ago my parents purchased a house on a 7-year mortgage. At the time dad and mom were employed as a carpenter and a social worker, respectively. The price was about 3X their yearly income, they put up 30% up front, and they paid off

Vixie will not like this, for sure. Another way to do this is to use your HTTP and DNS logs to "triangulate" seen user IPs with seen resolver IPs. It's surprising how many DNS resolvers are ill-placed with regards to their clients.
