You may or may not know of a famous post declaring the death of FreeBSD, which was abstracted to cover several other technologies. [If not, google for "netcraft confirms it".] I personally would not bother. I played with XSLT and its predec

Man, it's bad enough all the gringos wanted to learn Salsa last year and Tango this year. Now they are going to bring their kids? ;) On a serious note: isn't diagnosis something that varies across the attitudes of the doctors? A psychologis

Point 6 is inaccurate. As far as I know it's not a "Connection" in way they are claiming. It's a search on recent posts that appear in the "related posts" boxes. The "FBI" example is nice and scary, but the same holds true for Puppies and R

There is also Mao, which halts but is just as fun. The first rule of Mao is that you don't talk about the rules of Mao. And the winner gets to add a new rule.

In the real world you have stereo hearing and the ability to dart your eyes. This video has a similar feeling to a bad dream where Bad Stuff is happening but you can't move quickly enough.

HTML started out as a simple language for formatting research papers. It is a tree of text nodes and elements, ie section 1, table 3. It was not and is not intended to be a 2D anything. Over the last 20 years many people have layered on thi

I hear you, but I think it's more protest/irony than information. Page-breaking is a cheap trick to inflate page views, borne of the same low cunning that gives us items priced at $2.98 instead of $3. When I'm reading HN on a phone or other

What's the update? This is from 12 days ago. I ordered one near the beginning of April. So far I've received one (1) generic response to my enquiries. So we'll see, I guess.

It's more of a chronic problem than a sitedown problem. You might be surprised how crappy some hosts and resolvers are. Using dual 3rd-party DNS does give you one very good advantage in acute situations, though. When your host goes down har

Good work Patrick. I'd point out another, tricky source of failure: crappy dns hosting. It's worth it to buy dedicated dns hosting from two different providers. The cost is about 50 bucks per year.

Hey -- very good questions. This article was a broad overview, and I wanted to get across the fundamental "physics" of concurrency more than specific solutions. Where I talked about solutions it was to illustrate how those principles operat

I dunno. As an experiment I turned off RSS on my blog. So far one (1) person has mentioned it. I get less than 5% of traffic from RSS readers, and those are people following HN or Reddit's RSS, not mine.

How much sense does it make to use one search engine's traffic to gauge usage of another's? Anyone with ask.com as their home page / default is not counted. Hmm. I just checked with quantcast, and the graphs are similar: http://www.quantca

I happen to agree, funnily enough. I only talked about the extreme ends of the spectrum. I suspect that C/A systems have a natural place, say, up to datacenter-sized systems. After that they founder on latency and partitions. The big thing

It's probably to do with differences in scale. At the LAN level, he's right: partitioning is rare and C/A might make the most sense. At the WAN level, partitioning is a fact of life. There are at least two problems to solve on opposite ends
