For those things that aren't likely to be independently invented and can be kept secret, secrecy IS the norm. It also isn't like engineers or scientists would read patents to see which things have been invented. From knowledge implying high

Declaring opposing opinions to be knee-jerk must be the oldest trick in the world. Phrases like these infuriate me: "lazy conventional wisdom that the patent system is broken beyond repair". No, it's not lazy. Smart people have devoted a lo

Actually, no clicking required: The name is in the sidebar. I did need a while to find it there, though.

How? It is entirely possible to be technically easier to self-charge than change the fundamental efficiency of LCD.

"(now illegal) part of the 'Deutschlandlied' originally called 'Deutschland ueber alles'" Technically, it is not illegal. It's not part of the official anthem, however.

"But what exactly does Google need to defend against, if not actual patents Android actually violates?" Of course Android violates patents. Just like any sufficiently non-trivial piece of software...

Can you actually read software patents? To me they're undecipherable. "Openness" isn't worth a lot if it's all written in a language that no actual software developer understands.

Most of the software developers I talk to don't like software patents. Certainly not all, and I don't have precise numbers, but it's almost certainly the majority.

Yes, it is immoral. It might make it much harder for the sender to send any mails at all, because he's marked in the systems as a spammer.

The price of a Lion upgrade is pretty much immaterial, as the relevant price of OS X is really bundled into the price of the hardware. You cannot buy a Lion DVD and install it on a non-Mac PC.

They may not be mastered equally. For example, I find myself using vim to edit files on servers, because setting up emacs to my taste is always a bit of a pain. (I do know about TRAMP.)

The learning curve of Vim and Emacs making it hard to swith TO another editor? Sorry, but that makes no sense. :-) Maybe Vim and Emacs do have qualities that other editors don't match?

I think a problem with this kind of question is that it requires thinking about counterfactuals. You can't say "this patent is good" without thinking about what would have happened if it had not been granted.

Whether that is good or bad is debatable, but at least it's no trivial patent.

.tar.gz is not that uncommon, I would say. And once you have .tar.gz, support for .tar.bz2 is trivial to add.
