This seems a bit like replying to a suggestion that the world would be a better place without nuclear weapons by telling the other person to unilaterally disarm.

The original argument was that naming them "monoids" reduces cognitive load. The argument as I see it written is only that naming them reduces cognitive load. I don't see anyone suggesting that the specific name they happen

Like GP, I often wonder what untyped languages offer over typed languages for prototyping, and this "soooo much annotation!" thing just isn't a satisfying answer anymore. "Typed" does not mean "as verbose as C#

Those are not the ISP's users, and the ISP has already been paid for the traffic going there.

It is entirely appropriate to limit the speed and size of large trucks (high bandwidth users) on roadways or charge them more. This has nothing to do with net neutrality. ISPs already get to sell their users as much or as little bandwidth

Do you have the same complaint about, as another user mentioned, not being able to recover your data when you forget the password to an encrypted drive? This is a pretty disingenuous analogy. GP did not ask about recovering data from the

That seems like what stock compensation is aimed at. If the company gets a better deal on something, it retains more of its assets and is thus worth more to its owners.

if you want to really understand how most modern computers actually work, there's probably no better way than to learn C I have found advice like this to be a good sign that the speaker has a very limited understanding of how modern

It might be more productive to just not ascribe all of Antifa's actions to Berkeley or its student body.

I feel a vague sympathy for those people. Feh. You always treat a gun like it's loaded. I see no reason to treat a ballot differently. The potential consequences are far more wide-reaching with the ballot.

Honestly, tying the qualification of H1B to salary only works as some sort of state-sponsored unionization. It's not unionization. It's a simple case of letting the market decide who's got rare and valuable skills. If you

This still feels unsatisfying, since the target language is really just the source language with slightly modified surface syntax. Connecting languages with nontrivial differences is where writing compilers starts to turn interesting.

We use the tape's reference frame, of course! Looking at data stored on some particular device in the physical system is going to force a particular reference frame, where you will have a defined simultaneity. A global definition of si

I'm not sure it's useful to try to discuss concurrency with someone who refuses to believe that a group of machines can be in a state (which is really the point of the article).

Even if a Turing machine were a physical object (I had thought you would be aware that it's not), either one of those moves completes before the other, or both complete simultaneously.

No, we just have different notions of system state. If we have a pair of, say, Turing machine heads on one tape that aren't necessarily moving in lockstep, I say that the system state is the tape contents, the two heads' locations

It sounds like you're modeling the state space wrong. In a concurrent system, the state is not just one thread's (or one processor's, or one machine's) internal data (including program counter). That would be like saying

Those three are claimed as necessary conditions, not sufficient conditions. I agree that "engineer" also implies some degree of technical skill (like understanding the difference between sufficient and necessary).

The only actionable advice in here for someone tasked with developing a curriculum for teaching concurrency is to make sure the prerequisite courses instill the idea of computation as a sequence of state transitions.

How common is it for experiment.com funding to include labor? Most of the projects I checked look like they're just covering equipment and travel, and that's not going to be enough to work on the project full time.
