Similar here: Even though I was somewhat aware ssh could do some PKI magic, I didn't CONSIDER deploying it. But I'll try to get our sysadmins to use it. Having U2F/FIDO support seems like THE big bonus to me (also I'd li

That SIMs are expoitable was to be expected, and is another nail in the coffin of SMS 2FA. I'm just worried about the isolation between SIM and CPU - delivering a crypto locker via SMS would be an impressive feat, but wreak absolute ha

I basically came here to say the same, regarding the FET: Most likely there are parts with the same form factor but much lower resistance (both switching and fully on), which don't have that problem. The price-difference might matter i

Maybe people who will one day work on compilers? I learned a lot writing a compiler for a subset of C over one semester (in C++), and just recently built a "compiler" that is used in-house for a one-shot conversion task. Without t

Hm, last time I wrote a constant elimination I did so in the optimizer pass over the AST (as part of a lecture, we built a custom C frontend for LLVM and added some optimization passes). What you describe replaces e.g. "x = 3 + 4;"

This is an excellent write-up! Some friends of mine worked at one of the psychology departments as programmers/IT-guys while studying CS, lesson learned: Real knowledge of statistical methods is rare among psychology researchers; one

There was another post on this here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20871727 (10h ago, pointing to a short excerpt on lwn.net; 3 comments) Though I like this one more, as it points to the source.

Marketing aside: Is the gaming IPC that /practically/ relevant? I mean, I'm gaming on a early-2012 Sandy Bridge CPU (Xeon E3-1235 aka "cheap i7-2600"), and it feels like my late-2013 R9 290 is the limiting factor th

I wouldn't claim knowledge; it's only an abstraction from local low density areas: Where I live people drive less (suburbia) than where I was raised (country side) because there's practically no point in driving 30km/19m

If you've an android phone, just count your apps? I did, and expected 8 of my 20 apps to use GCM. MicroG revealed it to be 11 (actually 12 due to "MicroG services core" registering with GCM as well). I might be an outlier tho

There are multiple problems here: 1. As you stated, Google forces devs to rely on presence of the Google Play Services 2. Devs don't care: I don't see why e.g. Discord should not run properly on MicroG (I get push messages after l

I think there are two things at play here: 1. The US is much larger than the UK, with a lot of nothing/low population density. 2. Mentality might be different: I imported my current car used from the Netherlands; the country is tiny, b

You're right, but I dislike that route for three reasons: 1. It should just be plain unnecessary to apply such a hack. 2. There is still a single weak point for all services. 3. While this prevents against the run-of-the-mill "att
