If you're only talking about how you don't like the solution; and refuse to talk about the underlying problem; you're going to keep seeing the bad solution again and again and again. Here everyone says they don't like ad

Hey! That's pretty cool! I wasn't familiar with that (and probably would have been stumped by the question :) ). Thanks for the solution! Also; thanks for a great example of something that looks like cloning (and could be mistak

Well, we'll see how small the elaboration is... :) A brief review of how quantum teleportation works. (I have a diagram in quirk that might help with the explanation https://algassert.com/quirk#circuit=%7B%22cols%22:%5B

It's transferred, not cloned (which implies a copy). If you could clone quantum states; then you'd get FTL communication.

Const is primarily for documentation to indicate that the assignment happens only once and won't be redefined. Using 'let' or 'var' indicates to the reader that the variables value will be reassigned in the functio

For cloudformation; my team a few years ago got a lot of mileage out of using troposphere. https://github.com/cloudtools/troposphere The basic type checking done was quite helpful, and avoided some of the dumb errors t

This seems to be comparing a hand implemented neural network in python (and numpy) and one in rust. Even in this simple case, the author discovers that in the python case, most of the time is spent in non-python linear algebra libraries. Mo

1950's? I'm not familiar with that; I mean, technically speaking, the scientific community has 'known' about the impact of CO2 on global temperatures since Svante Arrhenius published in 1896[1]. There's a bunch of p

For those curious, the spike in National Security takedown requests in 2016-2017 seems to have been largely driven by requests from the Russian government (which have since petered out), not the United States. https://transparenc

When you are in UB it's even more interesting to ask what the hardware actually does because the standard will not specify anything.

Um... this seems to be a stronger case then to ask what the hardware does. If the compiler can generate arbritray code, then the only recourse to understand what the resulting binary actually does is to look at the actual generated assembly

Are you saying that electromagnetism is a nonlocal theory because it has a field? That is not the standard meaning of 'nonlocal'.

There are most certainly guarantees on the generated assembly. The assembly has to enforce the abstract machine. I want to know how it does that. It can change, that's fine, it can be improved, it can be made worse, but the idea that t

Guess there's some bigger context that I'm missing here. I wouldn't have expected saying "Understanding how your compiler enforces it's abstract machine is beneficial" would be a controversial position to take.

shrug . There's a difference between saying "This is a useful abstraction" and saying "understanding what assembly is generated is irrelevant in understanding what your program does so I will try to end all discussions

Yes, but that doesn't mean that what the hardware does is irrelevant.

It depends on whether you generate using rustc 1.28 or rustc 1.36, and whether you're compiling with or without optimzations. This does not crash in unoptimized rust (either 1.36 or 1.28) but it will crash in optimized rust 1.36. http

Fields are neither local nor non local. Locality is about how information propagates. Classical Gravitation defines a force field that is nonlocal, as it propagates instantaneously. Move a mass from point a to point b, and the entire univer
