It's not surprising to me that they keep it, but they do not need to keep personally identifying information for six months in order to do that. Seems a little improper, and also unnecessary, for employees to have access to that kind of thi

Sounds interesting, but totally lacking in specifics, or enough explanation of how some of the claims would work. Like the statement on the first page that engineers would be able to fix a stuck damper or leaky valve with "a few clicks" - h

Worth noting: that figure of $581tn is the total worldwide exposure in derivatives, not the actual amount lost. They give the much more reasonable figure of $1.1tn earlier, and suggest that's unlikely to be accurate, but then go on to visua

Yes, I rather like it. In fact, with the appropriate lines removed, 90% of the time I wouldn't even need it to navigate for me - and it's definitely good for more fuzzy journey planning. I can't see such a thing anywhere on their website, b

I was just thinking the same; when all my syntax highlighting in a region looks backwards, I normally assume I've got a mismatched quote just before it. I think I'd be thinking that with this all the time. Subtle changes in the background c

Nice to have routing that takes live status into account, but it's a bit limited since it only does station->station and doesn't do buses. Often if a line is closed you're better off going to a different, nearby station and walking or t

It's not necessarily a danger to not release a sequel immediately if they've got other things to work on. People will still buy Half-Life 3 in a few years time - similarly Blizzard have had ten-year-plus gaps between Starcraft - Starcraft 2

I'd suggest Player of Games first; I found it better as an introduction to the Culture. They're not really a series as such; his Culture novels share a setting but don't share any characters (well, almost none) or any particular plot contin

The ideal is waking up at 3am to do work? I can't think of many things that seem less like common sense than that. In the absence of an alarm or anything to wake me up sooner, I sleep straight through to the morning. I much prefer it that w

Why is it insane that you can argue that? If it were cut-and-dried that they were killing many people and providing no benefit, something would likely have been done about it by now. As it is, they exist in a grey area with plenty of room f

Keeping money within its own hospitals sounds more or less what you'd expect, surely? That's the whole point of having their own hospitals? And I expect the executives are paid quite a bit. I'm sure they're not a bunch of angels, but nobod

Which is not really a great assumption to make - people have been using weak passwords for decades against advice to the contrary, it's likely that isn't going to change in the short term.

I really enjoyed Swype early on, but I never figured out what their plan for it was - it seemed to be in perpetual beta, when I'd have happily been paying for it as an app. The weird installer shenanigans and insistence on internet access f

Kind of defeats the purpose of doing an AMA if you're not allowed to answer any of the interesting questions. I sympathise if that was the case, but people should remember what the second 'A' stands for.

I'm not saying that self-promotion is entirely and absolutely bad. Just that the post I replied to seemed to think that Mann was the be-all and end-all of the field, and I'm not sure how much that was based off his own propaganda.

Maybe because the biggest hurdle Google is trying to overcome with Glass is the the "fashion" side of it, which Steve Mann has not cracked in those 20 years and isn't going to if he has 20 years more. Also - does he really have so much ex

That regex doesn't match 720p on regexone (and shouldn't - it has required spaces in it). You're getting a tick for the bottom item because it's not supposed to match that case. As for your question, it generally depends how they're called

I don't think you really make the point you're trying to, given that half the time you're waiting at traffic lights, so the rest of the time you have to be doing considerably more than 20mph to achieve that as an average. Hence waiting behi

"Glue code" might be a little unfair, but it does tend to be much more used for internal tools than customer-facing code. I don't know official numbers, but I would think it'd still be still the #3 language after C++ and Java.
