One has to wonder: why even bother writing a post like this? I’m guessing insecurity. For what it’s worth, I’m fine with “falling behind.” I didn’t want to be a manager when I was at FAANG, and I don’t want to be an AI puppetmaster now. I g

Again, I’m not sure why it matters. Henri Rousseau couldn’t draw for shit and yet people adore his art. The represented idea and its aesthetic execution are what people mostly respond to, not how realistic a figure’s joints happen to be. (A

Like I said, I find the majority of European art before 1800 or so to be fairly dull, so I can't really answer this question. The prevailing technique improved remarkably post-Renaissance, and that's enjoyable to an extent, but th

What do you mean by “exceptions”? Who are we, in our own infinitesimal slice of human history, to judge historic taste in art? And is naturalism the be-all, end-all of good taste? If so, we need to throw out the majority of art in the 20th

Utterly bizarre to claim that a diverse group of people within an 800-year period were simply “bad at art.”

No, why would it have to be a dichotomy? That doesn't make any sense. For example, the Catholic Church is neither (solely) defined by a set of 2,000 year old writings, nor is it under strict authoritarian rule by the elected Pope. The

That’s really insightful, thank you for writing that up. You’re right, this was not something I encountered at all while visiting Australia. And I recognize many of these same detestable elements in US culture: something I want to get as fa

Weird to call it entitlement when the natural state of information is to be free. What's entitled is asking the government to enforce arbitrary restrictions on other people making use of some information that you somehow intangibly &qu

The idea that you can “steal” knowledge and ideas is farcical. One reason why China is so good at iterating rapidly on technology is that this notion of intellectual “property” doesn’t really exist there. Any cool new invention is immediate

What's the reason you rank Australia below the US? As a San Franciscan, I recently visited Sydney and Melbourne for the first time and thought they were incredible. Food-wise, I don't think I had a single bad meal in Melbourne, an

Is there a single AI corporation working for the public good? “Open”AI just shed the last vestiges of its non-profitdom, and every single AI CEO sounds like a deranged cultist. Wake me up when we have the FSM equivalent for AI. What we have

That’s kind of what I miss about classic shooters. No rankings, no matchmaking — just random jank in service of pure pubbie fun. Don’t like the map? No worries, we’ll cycle to a new one in a few minutes. (Or hop on over to a different serve

That mod was awesome. They somehow managed to make slow motion powerups work in a multiplayer action game without forcing it on every player in the map! Also had a strange RPG community entirely separate from the main game… funny how these

You can feel however you want about it, but people will vote for rent control if they start getting squeezed out of their housing. Hate it as an economic policy? Then make sure enough housing gets built before people get squeezed.

I'm not sure why this is suddenly news. As far as I'm aware from my immigration inquiries, the Netherlands has had a "Box 3" unrealized capital gains tax for many years. This merely looks like an adjustment/improvem

The Netherlands has had a form of "Box 3" wealth/unrealized capital gains tax for years. (This is just an update to existing policy.) So far, the country has not imploded. Time to update your priors.

Call it meaningless if you want, but this is a policy that renters getting priced out of their housing markets will eagerly vote for. And prioritizing existing residents over newcomers feels just to me. Focus on making it easier to build ne

Personally, I believe that housing security should be a right, and it’s just not possible to have that when your rent can spike arbitrarily in the future for reasons outside your control. Young people with no local connections and limited b

Personally, that's not how I use my NAS. It lives on my LAN and its only purpose is to provide bulk ZFS storage for my work machines while keeping the noise in a separate room. When I'm not using it, it's off.
