Here are some good papers, there are lots more, but a small primer on what I am talking about. Bottom line is this, I was replying to the response to this comment "More people living doesn't necessarily mean people living better l

I don't think you understood his comment fully. He was not claiming that "people think gosh I have 1000 more calories, I will have another child" it's that with increasing lifespans globally, the population is booming, b

Slightly related story, first time I ever played Quake Live was against F4taL1tY, with instagib railguns. I lost by one point and challenged him to a CS match. (played cal back in the pre-source days) He declined... but I got a signed t-shi

The real issue that needs to be discussed, but no one wants to, is how one particular three letter uses drugs as a source of black ops funding, so that it is beyond congressional oversight. Of course, congress is so compromised they are muc

My bet, especially with the rumors of a secret google data ship, is that google is getting ready to make a data power play. Something along these lines: "Look at the horrible way NSA treated our customers... We're gonna make sure

Then they can fork it and allow people to post issues on their fork... but this does get me to thinking about how many people even involved in the FOSS world don't understand it very well. Perhaps I am the one wrong here.

For those of you interested in learning how the cough scam cough system of credit scores works and how to maximize the system, here is a talk I have found very informative. It's a dirty business and industry... http://ww

Actually bitcoin has many strengths, but anonymity is not one of them. There have been multiple papers that go into how easy it is to trace, and even laundering style services like SRO used aren't very good. http://fc13.ifca

I'm curious why more people aren't setting up dmz'd ssh servers on something like raspberry pi's for communication/document transfer with others. I wonder how viable a torrent like ssh p2p system would function...

Just now saw this comment. I have also been discovering the beauty of individual thinkers blogs, in addition to HN (for example, Bruce Schneier's blog is one of my favorites). I'm a fairly recent daily HN reader who has moved from

I see your intention now, but you are using the words in the wrong context with the wrong definition. There are plenty of hosted open source products that require little to no setup.

"Comparing it to open source isn't really possible." I don't really understand this line of reasoning. You are running code on your servers, are you not? Your code is either closed or open. (closed) How is comparing it t

Lurkers first post here. I always said saying "I told you so." when stuff like this started getting revealed would feel like a hollow phrase. Some of us have spent quite a bit of time talking about these issues, and were mostly re
