Yeah, no, I agree. But my experience with it has also been that as soon as you start writing anything except simple code, its performance starts to suffer, while Chez handles complex abstractions more gracefully. So I suppose comparing them

Rare to see Chez brought up, I've been increasingly integrating it into my own work recently. Its performance¹ and maturity of the runtime keep surprising me. ¹ Frequently on par or even better than LuaJIT, though it can take some work

It's somewhat more constricting, certain types of compiler magic are hard to reproduce in plain C. For instance, dealing with things that need to be stack-aware, such as a GC or tail recursion, takes epic hacks like the Boehm GC or the

Surprisingly so, I use uv4l¹ for capturing 720p60 and 1080p30 and it has worked well, though I don't know if this method would work in your use case, since all it gives is a raw h264 stream over http, and a browser preview into it. ¹

Watch out, the suggestions in the other replies are hazardous. It's possible to add your windows Steam library to a Linux client, after mounting the windows partition, and this will work fine most of the time(so you could still give it

I mean, it's a one-time purchase that lasts you 2-4 years minimum. If anything, gaming is on the reasonably cheap side of hobbies, especially if you still otherwise have uses for a desktop, like most people here do. Compare getting tha

This here is more interesting than everything else in the thread. IIRC ATK is a TV show so I presume the experiment wasnt particularly rigorous, but it's still neat to learn.

OT, I hope you don't mind me asking, how does this work out for you? I have some reasons to consider moving to Finland but the language barrier seems very rough. Is it even possible for the average hacker to get by with just English?

This was definitely a bit weird for what seems like a question that was probably supposed to filter out malicious responses? I happen to still use the default binding but I could easily see myself forgetting if I happened to be an evil-mode

Phrasal verbs, huh. I never thought about it but I suppose English does have a gazillion of those nano-idioms. Turn up, turn down, turn on, turn off, turn to, turn in, turn out. I think I subconsciously avoid them as well when talking to so

This is something that worries me about this project. Is the focus more on hackability, or security/inspectability? The messaging is unclear, and this decision looks like a big sacrifice of the former for the latter. I'd maybe be

Extremely random factoid, but the world is tiny, so I once ended up in a WoW guild with Adrian, for a time. Cool guy. Horde, of course.

Yes, the remaster, on a locked-down hardware platform, both of which I will have to pay for again. Hopefully by then I will also be too old to remember what 'anti-consumer' means.

Eh, I wouldn't assign that too much importance. Most C/C++ tooling practically gives up on a missing closing brace and almost never gives the right error message.

Holy crap this is fast! At first I was mildly disappointed it wasn't a live search like hn.algolia.com, but I was seriously not expecting the results page to load so quickly. I guess goog et al. trained me to expect garbage latency in

Wasn't Recurecur talking about a 1 mass-of-earth BH, with a dyson-sphere-like structure 50 km away from it, rather than a 50km black hole? I don't understand the physics here myself, just checking if you haven't missed his po

This seems way too cool, and I'm not even particularly interested in these kinds of hacking areas, but I'll be sure to follow this project and I'll consider backing.

This feels hard to answer, and I feel like you're making some fundamental category error. Having a type system doesn't mean "don't do suspiciously-dynamic-sounding things", it means "don't accidentally mix

This has been exactly my experience. Great language, but ended up spending far too much time fiddling with the tooling and trying to comprehend the interactions between Clojure and the Java ecosystem.
