Apparently, Google has decided that its formal complaint system is "the Internet". We should all abide by Google's wishes and, as long as no internal complaint system appears, use the Internet as our complaint system, calling public attent

Yes! That's the one. . . . and no, I'm not willing to buy a trackball off eBay. Maybe I should start searching for old stock of these things again, though.

I think that's the point -- encapsulation is achievable in many non-OO ways, and encapsulation is basically just a subset of namespace management. In other words, encapsulation itself isn't necessarily bad, so griping about encapsulation

I think the problem the author has (but fails to articulate well) is that the variance in consequences of doing things in different orders is not explicit. In short, it's like you are never allowed to know what the balance of your account

These are principles many of us have been telling bosses, clients, readership -- anyone who would listen to us -- for quite a while. They're principles that get ignored every time they're brought up, though. It's awesome that Craigslist i

I think the main reason the G1 didn't do better is its lack of effective advertising. It's actually a better device (though I hear the G2 is actually going to do away with some of the advantages of the G1, the morons).

Good god . . . the FSF has outdone itself on the subject of ill-conceived, asinine publicity stunts (as long as we don't count RMS appearances among its publicity stunts).

Excellent! I think we've figured out the mechanism for prohibiting comment downvotes. . . . unless it's more complex than it at first seems. I don't really have the LISP Fu yet to figure it out from the source.

I said I'd like to know without having to submit it -- in short, without a submission showing up if it doesn't already exist on HN. Sometimes, I just want to know if something has already been submitted, and am not trying to submit it.

My all-time favorite pointing device was an optical trackball from Microsoft (I forget the model name). I haven't found one of those since the last I had one was stolen (yes, really) back in 2003ish. The IBM Model M [1] (and certain imitat

A quick search didn't find anyone else suggesting this, so: I'd like a link on the page for a particular discussion thread that takes me immediately to the top of the entire discussion (the initial submission, in other words). That way, I

Perhaps ironically, I agree that Microsoft had some good keyboards and pointing devices -- but that was about ten years ago. Since then, they've trended downward in quality. I'm not so impressed in even the mice and keyboards these days.

Professional tennis players and bicyclists with no interest in the technology themselves pay people to maintain Twitter accounts for them. I think that pretty much fits the definition of "majority adoption".
