I wrote a PHP repl back in the 5.2 days as I wanted one that could auto-complete, use readline, and survive fatal errors. My solution (really an experiment) was to write all the commands in a temp file and run that file out-of-band. This wo

Reading "A Pattern Language" immediately changed the build-out plans for our new office. We're truly putting these ideas in practice. We have a large-ish, well-lit open space, surrounded by several conference rooms. The open

I have Network Link Conditioner installed on my Yosemite Mac OS X box and it works fine (though it was installed prior to the Yose upgrade). I learned about it here: http://nshipster.com/network-link-conditioner/

I finally found a use for mixed string/int keys. I have a routine that plucks key/value pairs out of one associative array and builds another, and allows you to rename the resulting key names at the same time. Using mixed keys all

I'd counter that these messes aren't caused by git; rather they are messes that without git you wouldn't even bother cleaning up. However, git lets you fix the mess in such a way that you'll have a clean commit history.

Competition isn't bad. Markets are huge, don't let that part scare you. However, two-sided market startups are very, very hard. Unless your business model works before having a liquid market form, you're probably doomed. Espe

The ltree module is really awesome. If you have to do any hierarchical stuff I feel it's much better than nested set implementations. Great performance with gist indexes and high level operators for querying.

I have a Canon T3i and 2 young kids. AI servo is the right idea in theory, but on even a lower-end DSLR it just doesn't help much. If a kid is running towards the camera, it will keep refocusing as the subject moves, but it's alwa

Our bonus plan is based on revenue growth, not profits. Most of your counter-arguments are based on critiques of redirecting profits, which in our case is not what's going on. That said, you are right that generally companies shouldn&#

We came to this conclusion as well; we decided to do bonuses based on Y/Y revenue growth rather than equity. The bonuses are not capped. This allows us to: 1) Justly reward our employees to the upside (with cash, delivered semi-anually
