I'd be happier if Titanium started up in under under five minutes. Something is seriously troubled in their linux version.

Oh, believe me, I'd love to. The difficulty, however, is that extracting H264 or FLV streams from embed codes is a process that every video host is actively attempting to thwart--and there's some 15,000 of them, and one of me. :)

There's a lot of good stuff here--notably the (finally) decent support for literal sets, arrays, and maps in JSON style... but most importantly, closures! I am so sick and tired of creating one-off anonymous classes just to pass a function

We use a modified webkit2png, along with some ruby and erlang RPC stuff, to take thumbnails of flash videos at vodpod.com. It works great!

I started writing android apps four months ago. My co-worker started developing iPhone apps two months ago. We have similar levels of "Arrrgh, this is so broken" conversations--but about entirely different things. The android emulator is wa

Guys, you're all missing the point. Clearly what Apple wants is a virtual machine, implemented in Javascript, capable of running Scheme bytecodes. ;-)

Clearly, I only write Ruby because I never learned C (or Modula-2 and Java for that matter) first. And I'd never write in a high-level language to deploy to multiple platforms with totally different APIs. Is this article supposed to be ridi

Android's notification system is one of the things that really rocks about the platform. It's quick to scan, never gets in your way, and works seamlessly.

In some ways, I think the recent obsession over iphone ToS is a community backlash, though it seems overblown. I am surprised that four developers I know are dropping their iPhones at the end of contract and switching to Android. We must

A friend of mine maintains Thoth, a lightweight blog engine written with Ruby. It's a quality piece of work. http://wiki.github.com/rgrove/thoth/ If you're interested in photoblogging or a heftier multi-contributor model, I've written Cor

Doubtful. Adobe, Appcelerator, et al are not in competition with Apple, only making products which run on theirs. The ToS have always been disclosed as variable. It's a good reason not to predicate your business model on the whims of anothe

Agreed. Android copy and paste only works in 1 out of 10 text fields I've tried it on. Sometimes UI elements give a long-press option to copy. Seriously, copying an address from a text message to google maps should NOT be hard.

Familiarity and learnability are not the only rubrics for UI design. While it's good to make products understandable by two-year-olds, there are other important considerations in UI. Can it help you accomplish the task efficiently? Reliably

I agree; it really depends on the individual situation. Most of the hourly folks I know who are commuting long distances are in the 30-45 dollar/hour range. Sometimes you have flexible hours, sometimes not. Other times you can freelance. Ot
